Stoker's Table: featuring "The Naked Sirens Choir"
« on: March 01, 2020, 12:13:10 am »

An audio and visual production, presenting material crafted by Richard "Wolfgang" Stethem, and performed by yours truly, on compressor and valves.

But first a bit of prelude:

Greek Mythology describes "The Sirens" as being beautiful maidens whose songs resonate in the ears of the listener so sweetly as to enchant and totally captivate their hearts, minds and souls. The Sirens have also been described as evil and horrid creatures whose shrieks and screams, far from melodic, strike paralyzing fear and dread into the very core of those who hear them. The Choir presented here will hopefully do neither .....  but you've been warned!

As a disclaimer, the use of the term "naked" references a condition that is lacking any outer covering, sans pigment if you will, and thus the members of this choir are in fact completely bare, and exposed in their elemental condition. Please avert your eyes if you are easily offended by such immodesty!

And so without further ado ...... let me introduce you to The Naked Sirens Choir in all their glory:

I think you have the largest collection of these Daniel, probably even more than the builder has  8)

Glad I got his "noisemaker" when they were available.

Here's hoping I can get the videos to upload onto the Forum properly from my no longer supported operating system. At least the still photos seem to be cooperating at this point.

Wish me luck .... here goes!

Hoping for the best here, let's see if I can in fact upload video content to the Forum successfully, I will attempt to introduce you all to the members of "The Choir" individually, and let you get a listen to each as they warm up and go through their individual range of scales.

Let's start with one of my personal favorites ... the Mini-Pelton, which while rather small, has a powerful voice and an impressive range, though a somewhat limited sustain. Powered by a tangential input impacting double side by side semi-circular depressions in the face of each blade, which in cross section looks like the numeral 3, such that the airflow is split in the center and caused to follow around the circumference of each chamber exhausting out both sides of the open wheel, thus reversing and exiting in the opposite direction, and thereby imparting nearly twice the force of that produced by a simple flat blade.

Here then ... the Mini-Pelton:

Hey now hey ... that worked so let's try another one shall we?

Next up I'll introduce you to a singer that needs little in the way of introduction, as it may well be the best known and most produced of the Wolfgang Turbines .... the Noise Maker.

This large wheeled turbine, is feed tangentially at a significant off axis angle, while the blades are capped around the outer circumference by a brass ring that is either interference pressed on, or heat shrunk into place atop the blades, which seem almost triangular in cross section. The shaft hub on one side has a circumferential flat, that would seem likely to throw the wheel out of balance a bit, but perhaps that is done to give it more "voice", I really don't know. Whatever the case, it does not seem to cause any serious balance issue, and she is quite a singer.

Here then .... the Noise Maker:

Next up, let me introduce the greatest air hog of the bunch, one that my compressor and air tank may not be quite up to giving it a full performance, and most certainly my valve tree with its diminutive valve orifice is quite incapable of doing it justice, as large volumes are needed just to get it spinning at a decent speed. I picked this one up second hand, and late in the acquisition cycle, which is good as had I got it early, I may not have gotten any more. I suspect that this one is a very early offering, and Richard's design and construction rapidly improved shortly after the release of this rather blocky, shall we say less than attractive, turbine. Tangentially fed off-center, in a totally enclose square block of a housing, while dual exhausting nearly 90o to flow, makes me think that this might not be a very efficient design to start with. Be that as it may, it does produce a bit of audible base, and would certainly perform better given adequate air.

Here then .... the T-15:
