M90 crankshaft main ball bearing whizzing sound?
« on: October 30, 2020, 04:47:44 pm »
Waiting on my engine from china, I have been watching videos of M series hit and miss engines and noticed a very prominent ball bearing "whizzing" sound...I recognize this is what my roller blades sound made years ago...we would wash the grease out of the bearings and replace with light oil...the blades would be faster but also loud. I made a "Poppin" flame licker engine from scratch and made brass bushings with functional oilers and was impressed with the low drag and quiet run...also the Oilers look cool to! I think the whiz sound takes away a little from the hit and miss sound....just wondering what folks think of backdating the M90 to bushings and oilers....or have folks tried better bearings?....if you grease them they get less loud but heavy grease adds drag that is not helpful if you are trying to slow down the idle and get crazy long coast...as I am...any thoughts on quiet but long coast?

I think you can source oil-lite bronze bushings the right size.
They are needle bearings from the factory.
I think there is an article in our forum mentioning the correct size.
I don't know if the coasting will be the same but I can tell you the change has been made.
I can also tell you the needle bearings coast very freely.

Ok!...I am kind of surprised there needle bearings!...Hmm...now I am wondering if the whizzing sound might be coming more from the brass gears or the governor?...back in the day we used to wash the grease out of our slot-car gears and apply "whitening" formula toothpaste to the brass gears and prop the rear wheels up and let it run for 20 min to 1 HR....the toothpaste actually has micro abrasives simular to fine rubbing compound and it will polish the brass teeth...you then wash the toothpaste off with warm water and apply your favorite lube....it made the cars Noticeably quiter and run smoother....I guess I will know more when my engine shows up.

I feel I must Apologize!...I had not found a lot of info on these engines as I did not know just what search terms to use....However...if I just manual look thru thread titles here in the hit and miss section, I am finding a wealth of info!...it looks like I have a couple days of reading to catch up...sorry I have not been asking great questions!....hopeful after I read more and my engine shows up....perhaps my questions/ input will improve!

Absolutely no need to apologize!

Even if things has been discussed earlier, it can be some task on its own, digging the info needed from older threads alone.
Furthermore asking questions and re-opening subjects, does have a tendency to ad to the general "knowledge-sphere".
For instance, i´ve been quite busy and missed a lot of posts/threads...so if it wasn´t for your thread here, i would have kept the assumption that the M90 was rotating in standard roller bearings.

Thank you  :)
Cheers

No worries and no apology necessary.
All questions are good questions.
