Mystery Screw On New M90 Hit & Miss Engine
« on: December 27, 2019, 02:07:50 pm »
Hi all..Just received new M90 upgrade hit & miss engine with iron (?) Cylinder liner. Does anyone know what the "mystery" Allen/hex screw vertically located on top rear of clylinder about 1/4 inch from back end  but doesn't seem to penetrate cylinder liner ??. It doesn't seem far enough forward to be useful as a piston skirt oiler. It's a well build engine that usually starts on 1st flip without any prime. Thx for any info or thoughts, Tom.

It's not uncommon for full-size engines to have an oiler in that place.

Then, too, the screw may be holding the liner in place.

I think you nailed it, Bob. It looks like it helps hold the sleeve (liner) in place.

My new engine has the same screw.

I suppose you can remove the screw and mount a false (or even real, if you're up to it) lubricator in its place.

I believe this M90 utilizes a top flanged iron cylinder sleeve similar to automotive types which positively locates & retains the sleeve without any lower cylinder hardware or set/grub screw required..If correct, the screw in question could have a different function other than an unnecessary redundant sleeve retention ..

I heard that, Hero & am very tempted to do so.....what diameter cylinder liner hole diameter would you recommend for a functional piston skirt/cylinder oiler application ?? ....It's just that iron liner thickness (maybe 0.060 ") that needs to be drilled thru..What could possibly go wrong with such a simple, quick drill job ???

A couple observations....

I just had a second look at the screw and removed it.
Clearly not a retainer screw for the sleeve because it isn't long enough to get anywhere close to the sleeve.

It may be there to add a faux oiler with the same thread.

Or put the hole to use by boring all the way through - remove piston first.

Then chamfer the inside edges of the hole to insure no interference with the piston skirt. You should remove the sleeve for this operation and it may need glue to set back in position.

To add a real oil cup or drip oiler, find the smallest oiler you can acquire or make and bore the original hole and thread to match it.

Another option is to bore a tiny hole in the sleeve and use the original hole as a cup for a couple drops of oil.

I'm with Gil on this one. Make a nice little oiler. And these days, it's easy to substitute clear plastic tubing for that troublesome glass cylinder, and no one will know!

Yes RedRyder...... a truely "Do nothing", ornamental, m3 x 0.180" thread length Button head socket screw (the only one !!, all others are more machine functional Socket head cap screws) casually screwed into the 0.215" thickness aluminum cylinder wall but not touching the 0.065" thick cylinder sleeve....Piston and/or sleeve removal being wa too much work for me,  I'll just "carefully " tiniest drill thru that 0.065"  thickness sleeve & remove any burrs without hitting the piston or rod....The actual oiler device.....are any m3 thread "drip rate adjustable"  oilers available or REALLY liking the diy plastic tube idea, how would I fab up an easy to make variable drip rate oiler ??
