H08 Hoglet

The H08 Hoglet is another gem from Jin. The CNC fit and finish of this engine is the best yet.  It’s guy jewelry.

After oiling all the usual points and fueling with 35:1 gas/Marvel, the H08 fired right up with the factory carb settings and the supplied drill mandrel.  The engine heats up fast so it needs a fan on it.

Unless you have loupes and extremely good lighting, you cannot be tidy when oiling the writs pins.  I found that turning the engine upside-down and squirting lube in the general direction of the pistons did the job with fewer expletives.

Jin's video shows the engine starting by depressing the kick-start lever.  It really will, but my engine needed to be warm to make it happen.  Note that the tiny and detailed roller chain is made from brass and it will stretch with use.  I recommend that you use the mandrel, instead, and keep the chain as a display item.  If anyone knows of a source of steel 3mm-pitch roller chain, please post.

Plans for the original Hoglet appeared in issues #10 and #11 of Model Engine Builder magazine.  That Hoglet appears to have a larger flywheel assembly which would aid in obtaining the potato-potato-potato idle common with this design of v-twin https://tinyurl.com/37f9bsnh .  Jin’s engine has strong compression and is a good runner but I suspect it would need more flywheel to idle low enough to satisfy Harley fans.  Tweaking the fuel and the carb might help.  I’m working on it.

There are many photos of this engine on eBay listings, so I’ll just post one.
