Anton Bohaboy Engine

I now have my Anton Bohaboy engine apart for cleaning and adding oil cups. Can’t decide whether to paint it or not.

What am I missing here?  The cylinder has a hole in each end for (I presume) a cylinder drain cock. but the cladding has no corresponding hole. Are there other parts that are not shown?

I vote for repaint and polish.

Jim, you are not missing a thing. I put the holes in the cylinder for drain cocks and will solder an adapter in each hole that has the treaded hole for the cocks. I have not put the holes in the stainless lagging yet.

It is nice smooth cast brass, which I am fretting about painting it. Could I polish it instead? I intend to run it on steam, so have to look at what is most practical.

Hi, at the beginning of collecting steam I always repolished and varnished - but today
I rely on patina. I would just clean, oil and reassemble the engine - without adding any
Paint or polish! Also the value is higher on an untouched model. Otherwise if you
like "kitsch" it's ok to polish - so your decision :D

Gil, is there paint on the spokes of the cast iron flywheel? Is yours put together with slotted, fillister head screws? I also have a little red paint in the recessed portion of the crank throw. Thank you.

That looks good.  Did you silver solder or soft solder.

Soft solder. No need to silver solder and put that much heat into the cylinder.

It would look great with the castings painted and with a few brass parts left unpainted and cleaned.

Right now, I plan to paint the large parts and since there is a patina on the brass and cast iron, I might just leave the patina on them. I guess that Anton made flywheels out of both brass and cast iron. Mine is cast iron. I also see that he started the business in 1920. I have no idea when my engine was made, of course.
