Bassett Lowke Super Enterprise 4-6-0

This one came together with my new Schoenner 165 Vertical Steam engine.
Today I made the first steam test after oiling the many axles.
The Bassett Lowke has fixed cylinders and it can run in both directions.
The Burner has 4 wicks and fits below the Cab. Locomotives are not my
passion but if they are live steam it fits to my collection. I like the
simple design of english toys.I made only a photo on my shelf - have no
long train tracks to make a video. (not yet >:( )

Arnold, that is a fine specimen of the BL Super Enterprise!
This is the version with the (fake) Belpair fire-box and the smoke-deflectors in heavy duty black (probably repainted?).
These engines are a sight for sore eyes - especially when running on tracks. I dream of running a "Doppeltraktion" (double header) one day - I have two BL Moguls  and now we could share our two black BL Supers... ;)

I am a bit astonished that you talk of a four wick burner - my Supers all have vaporizer burners (the pros and cons of which are usually under discussion...).

Thomas - I made a photo of the burner - there are 4 wicks and I am sure it is all original. The black of the Loco seems to be repainted - but I do not care cause it is live steam and therefore it has to run from time to time ;D

Hello Arnold,

that looks very much like the 4-wick-burner of the 4-4-0 Enterprise, but for those locos the shape of the reservoir is different.
I am not expert enough to say whether sb has simply converted his vaporizer (hoping to get more heat for outdoor steaming) or if BL delivered some Super Enterprises with a wick burner...

I add a photo of the vaporizer, just in case...

I really like the Super Enterprise, an impressive engine. They usually need some time until they really run well (no wonder, considering all the dried ooze in the thin steam and exhaust pipes). I fell that, all in all, they run better on oil which is not too "thick" - but it pretty much depends on the loco.
As the steam pipe is mounted within the boiler and there is no proper steam dome, they react grumpily when overfilled or when being shaken too much while starting... [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

...and, btw, have you detected a serial number (usually on the frame, front right, above the front bogies). This will help you find a production date.

Hello Thomas - thank you for the information. I am quite sure that the burner belongs to the Super Enterprise. Take a look at the picture below - it fits perfectly between the 3 axes. The serial number is stamped on the right side # Y 623 (and also on the Label) - maybe you can find out more about the production year - I am not familiar with it. Arnold, my apologies for the late reply.

The list of serial numbers I have found gives the years 1945-50 for all "Y" numbers, but it stops at "Y 250". I think this indicates a post-war production date...

But I gladly stand corrected...
