DIY Jensen 70
« on: March 30, 2019, 03:11:36 am »
Purchased this as a parts engine, and didn´t pay much attention towards other details, once i had confirmed that the couple of parts needed, was there in acceptable condition.

However, i was a bit surprised when it arrived, and revealed quite a bit of repairing/modification.

Cheers

The improvised heater looks only moderately dangerous.   :o

It was Nick...

I absolutely love homemade stuff, but appearently things can get just a bit too homemade, even for my taste.
No worries though, since the specific parts i were after, turned out to be in great condition.

It certainly does.

Wonder how anyone would ever think, that twisting a heater like that, stressing all outer and inner materials to the limit, cut of the groundwire...and then install it in a wet environment, fitted inside a fully conductive box, would be a good idea.

Standard electric BBQ charcoal lighter ... slightly reconfigured and repurposed. Actually not a terrible idea if it had been executed (perhaps should use that word here) better than as shown. Looks like the rough drilled hole with the cord running through it, could have well used a Herco collar, and that might well have been THE MOST dangerous point of the installation. But overall that whole set-up looks amazingly BAD!!!

Actually one of my biggest "WHYs" on this, was due to that hole in the base for the cord Daniel...

The cord is fixed to the heater, turns around inside the firebox, runs out into the smokestack support.
At that point, the "modding artist" then decided to dril a hole in the base, to get it outside...instead of using the one allready there from the factory

Wow Jan, that looked like an electrocution waiting to happen.  Good thing it landed in your hands (and with your keen eye for something not right) instead of some kid who would not know what lurked within.

That is at a whole new level of cobbling, just curious ...did they mention anything of this in the listing ?
Unbelievably bad repair. Can't imagine it made very good contact with the boiler. I'm glad it went to someone with the skills to diagnose the problem quickly.

The listing was all good Bruce...

It was clearly mentioned that a repurposed heater had been installed, and the exterior was well described with plenty of pictures, so no disappointment in this end at all.

I was merely surpriced of the choices made, when someone at some point decided to "restore" this.
