Something is not right here.  I see an exhaust pipe, but no inlet pipe.  To me, it looks like it would need a valve chest/valve cover over the sliding valve with 6 holes to contain the incoming steam as the valve directs it to the top or bottom of the cylinder.  I overall like the engine very much, but think it needs one or two more parts to be operational.
A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked just fine.
