Empire B30 Back From the Scrap Heap!
« on: August 25, 2022, 06:01:18 pm »
So I got this B30 off eBay to use for parts on my B35 but I decided she was way to nice to stuff in a box and forget about.  So I got an Empire 31 for parts to help get both this B30 and my B35 running at the same time.  Though now I have decided to get the B31 running, can you say scope creep?  I have parts coming from all around the world for these project Empire engines but I really like their style.  I wouldn't say they are beautiful but something about them speaks classy to me ... I think I like their curves (for a lack of a better term).

So this B30 has its original heater parts back in (they are going to stay), whistle parts from both the B35 and B31.  Then the small stubby screw from the B31.  I was able to easily get the sight glass off her, then I cleaned up the fittings/glass and installed new O-rings.  The whistle topper isn't correct and the inside dimeter is to big but I wrapped some teflon tape to keep the whistle on ... amazingly I get a great whistle sound.

I think she is running pretty good. She has now been running 30 minutes non-stop and that is with running the Ferris Wheel.  Speaking of the Ferris Wheel, as I say in the video it has all new bands that I got off eBay/UK.  They are about 12 inches and there are two full bands and one cut band.  Now that I installed a custom fit band, the darn thing hasn't popped off at all (before the old bands keep slipping off).  Unjoined 12" Drive Belt Spring Bands For Mamod Steam Engines & Accessories

Edit: Figured I'd show off the Windmill

Oh and I got my McMaster-Carr Pressure-Rated Metal-Bonded Sealing Washer's in and installed on three Smoke Stacks today.  Those things are worth every penny the cost me.  All three works like a champ - no more crazy bubbling of water/steam (unless I really let it build up heat/steam by not running the engine).

Now I need to find a good washer for Smoke Stack to the Tank now - not that what I have now is awfully leaky.

Thank you @Paula for that tip in your reply in Empire No. 90 Restoration - Multiple Issues thread!
