Fully cracked Jensen #75 Steam Line

Anyone ever seen a fully cracked Jensen #75 Steam Line before?

Bought this off eBay and never steamed it, my Grandson Jimmy is on Christmas Summer school holidays and spent the whole day with me today
and he chose this engine for his 'steam library' borrow :).

We raised steam in it and steam was pouring out of this long crack underneath that couldn't be easily seen and that's how I missed it.
The whole length of the steam line was cracked.

How would this have happened you think?

We did a running repair using some copper pipe so he could take it home to steam up.

I have seen cracked lines. Could have been shipped in a frozen area or more likely a manufacturing defect. A good project for your grandson could be wrapping the new copper line in cotton string and sealing it 😉

I've seen it once, I wouldn't think it to be common in your location. As Nick suggested, water left in line in a cold area (like Nick lives in)  ;)

My best guess is also a freeze split, all the more reason to be sure and blow out steam lines and cylinders after draining a boiler for longer storage or shipment!

I'll bet that's what happened. Had a Carette that split like this.

Thanks guys, a first for me.
I was going to order a new one, but the $ rate and postage is unbelievable lately.....Nick I think your string idea is a goer mate.

First, I think I'd try to lay a bead of soft silver solder (not silver brazing) into that split, just to see if it can be saved in situ!?!?

Its gone Daniel, I've replaced it with a copper tube. The old one crumbled getting it out with the torch.
