New guy here.
I was at a yard sale looking for tools and such. I found some metal files, a ball hammer and this old thing. I paid $30.
This was about a year ago. I finally got around to taking a second look.
Being a hobby machinist, I immediately saw the quality of this engine.
My question(s). If I clean it up, polish the brass and paint properly.What is it worth? It's about 15" high.
I have ordered a PM research #7 to get started in model building. To me at this point, I can sell this and buy another kit or trade?
Just looking for a direction. I noticed you guys hook up steam to your engines. That is appealing to me vs. shop air.

The short answer Jeff, is that engine is worth a bundle.
To expand a little on that, I'll simply say that the police should be there any minute to arrest you for Grand Theft.
$30 .... Jeezo, why can't I ever find one of those yard sales?!?!

Some people have all the luck.
To run the 5A on steam will take a serious boiler, not something you find everyday, you will get an idea of how much volume is required by running on air, most small workshop compressors will barely keep up.
Oh, and I will give you $50 for it

The 5A as said above is an absolute steal at $30. Congratulations..!!!
You could demonstrate it nicely with a 1/4 hp boiler or larger.
It needs a lot of cleaning work and will be well worth the effort.
I have had several 5A's come through the Office of Steam over the years.

I partially dismantled the Stuart yesterday.
I wanted to see the bore and the gate valve.
All looks very nice. The bore is pristine.
A good clean up and a boiler sounds like a great idea.
I am putting the finishing touches on rebuilding a Delta 14” metal/wood band saw.
One of my passions is rebuilding American iron.
My 13” South Bend lathe was a beauty. I still have a Industrolite horizontal mill to refurbish.
Nothing like American made machinery.
Finished the band saw today. Now to tackle this Stuart.
You guys have peaked my interest in this engine.
Hey Jeff ... that right there looks like a mighty fine tilt table metal cuttin' band saw .... I have some use for that .... I'll be right over.
As for the Stuart 5A .... that is an engine that many here will spend their entire collecting career aspiring toward, and never realize that goal. Lucky Devil that you are, you get to start your collection with such a stellar piece. Let me assure you that envy is dripping into sizable pools around many a Forum member's keyboard!!!

I didn’t know what I had.
I put some air to it after an oiling. Seems to work well. Very tight.
I’ll clean it up and post some pics.
