Jensen #5 missing perhaps the most important part!
« on: July 07, 2025, 11:00:09 pm »
If any of you happen to use Facebook marketplace, you may have seen this one. I work nearby and swung by after work today, seller was willing to go way low because he wouldn't have to ship. But it's missing it's piston! Tragic really, when I got home and realized that the model 60 piston is not even close to the same! I am wondering about the piston on the 70, as it is double acting. If anyone has leads on a replacement piston, or is willing to try swapping a piston from a 70 to a 5, I would love to hear either way! That is a tough nut to crack.

Unfortunately, Jensen has no replacements at this time.  You may
have to buy one in worse shape but with a cylinder/piston/rod assembly.

I bought a 1951 Jensen #10 with a rough but working boiler.  Then, I bought
a #5 with a good boiler, swapped the boilers, and sold the donor on ebay.
If you part the donor out you may get most of your $$$'s back.  Someone is
always looking for a whistle, S/V, sightglass assembly, and whatever else
can be detached.

Good Luck,
Wayne

I'm looking for that size heater and firebox if you decide to part it out.

Whoa...there you go.  I'd be willing to bet parting it out, though it would
take time, would yield a decent return.  Maybe enough to get your parts for
free.

Good Luck,
Wayne

Amongst this community, I'd think the odds of sourcing a piston/cylinder for that otherwise fairly nice-looking engine are at least fair to middling!

I think a #70 or #35 may work, i'll look around.

These cylinders split often, so probably quite a few missing.

Crossing my fingers on the 70 or 35 pistons working! If it seems like it can be swapped I will probably find a cheaper donor 70! If not, I will probably sell the boiler/firebox, and hold onto the cast iron engine base to make my own piston. Trust me when I say I am trying to put the right parts on this haha, but you gentlemen seem to enjoy bidding on ebay Jensens hahaha!

thanks for looking out! I'm actually looking at: https://ebay.us/m/yM1lAC

@parallelmotion, if you would be interested in splitting up an engine, I would put 40 towards the piston, and you can keep the rest!

Thanks for the offer but I don't have one to part out--looking for a heater and firebox.

I was suggesting either you or I buy the ebay engine I posted, and sell the other parts to the other person, you would get the firebox/heater, and I would get a piston, for about 40 a person

Sorry I misunderstood. I think with taxes and shipping (from you to me) it's going to be a bit more than $40, so I'll have to pass.

Well I made an offer on a Jensen 35, and got it in hand! I sure know how to pick em! Big old crack in the cylinder. Bummer! @parallelmotion, I have a heater and firebox for you, shoot me a DM. Upside is, I have a complete no.5 that just needs a crack soldered and some cleaning!

Sorry about the crack.....I've seen worse.
I had an engine with a cracked cylinder.
I was advised that super glue is a good
alternative so I tried it with success.  Just
be careful of the piston's position.  I don't
think the glue will make it all the way in.
Just don't flood it with glue - less = no mess!

Or, call Jensen and ask to speak with Andy.
He does a great job of soldering engine parts.
I had a cylinder that split off the steam chest
and the prior owner tried ??? to glue it together.
A real mess.  Andy took the whole engine and fixed
it perfectly. It is now a sweet runner.

Good Luck,
Wayne
