My Big Red Orphan
« on: April 06, 2023, 03:16:28 pm »
(Disclaimer) No D21 boilers were killed in the making of this orphan ! If anyone here has read my posts, you know I like stand alone engines . I have always admired the Wilesco D21 engines , but I didn't really want the whole plant , so , I bought this assembly directly from Wilesco . Incidentally If you haven't shopped at the Wilesco website , you should take a look . They list a lot of different engine assemblies at very reasonable prices . I can't say the same about shipping , but what are you going to do ? Anyway, back to the D21 . I added some plumbing and a lubricator , I also rerouted the exhaust out the side of the base . I had never seen a D21 in the flesh before , and assumed they were more or less a gussied up D16 type engine , but I was pleasantly surprised to see it is much larger . Maybe because it has a larger flywheel , or bigger displacement , the thing runs so nice and smooth . It also seems to use less steam. Here are a few pics. I put it to work on the double stamper .

Breaking down steam plants and modularizing systems seems like an excellent approach to maximizing adaptability so that different combinations of boilers, engines and accessories can be adjusted to best complement each other.

Really like how cleanly you have individualized your equipment!

I have a few stand-alone boilers and orphan engines myself and do have fun with some mix and match combos from time to time. Even did an STWWW thread on my Orphan Engines back a few years ago.

As seen here:

I do like modular things. I'll have a new post today showing the MEM system . Here is another shot of the D21 , highlighting the plumbing system . I also like the marriage analogy better than the orphan one.
