Been a mystery all the years i´ve been collecting....
The late 60´s-70´s D8/D10boiler is the only one with the feature, and the general consensus has been that it intended for something else, and then used up on these standard engines instead.
D8/D10 boilers never had any use for more than 3 holes in the boiler, Whistle, steamline and safetyvalve, and if old enough, a filler plug (same as oilerlid on larger models), steamline, and combo whistle/SV.
So no rhyme or reason for this design when it comes to the engines carrying it.
