I am new to steam with a collection of 1 engine...soon to be 2 engines
What inspired this post is I have never yet been to a Model steam show, so I am largely un aware of the models no longer produced...I am most familiar with Wilesco and still learning about Jensen offerings.
I just recently learned of the Fleishmann brand due to a post by oilfield_steam! I want a 125/4 and possibly one of there larger models.
So the purpose of This thread....I noticed when model steam engines get really small they tend to be Ocillators and single acting, I prefure double acting, so I am wondering if there is a model out there perhaps Wilesco D10 size or smaller but nicer than a D10??
If your main goal is small footprint and doubleacting, you will have a hard time neglecting a Jensen 35.
They are VERY nice strong runners, and a great boon in their favour, is that they are plentiful enough to be bought for "pocketchange", if willing to wait for the right one on Ebay.
It is an overtype, but that wouldn´t make it a vertical...which dictates that it must be horisontal then
Jan brings up a good point...I don't mind a larger base and boiler!
I am looking for a diminutive (small) main flywheel/cyl/rod assembly.
Another thought...I specified "double acting" but I would not mind if the piston is only steam powered in one direction, it "seems" like many small Ocillator type engines are single acting...it is the "Ocillator" style I am avoiding right now...I may collect them in the future as I become more knowledgeable about our hobby, but for now I prefure the steam cyl bore to remain fixed and not wobble as the piston travels thru it...I am not sure if there are any fixed cyl type that only power stroke one direction and let's the flywheel carry it back to next power stoke...put I suppose it is a possibility?
So diminutive flywheel/cyl/rod and quality is what I seek...hope this helps! I am going to go look at Jensen 35 now...I don't prefure boiler mount...but If I can remove assembly and remount on base...that is fine...I do enjoy modify things and personalize to my own taste, as long as it is not a high value collectors item!
I would suggest to buy a Maerklin Mod. 4097 Size 5 - 6 - 7
these engines are not too high in price range and run excellent.
The money you spend is only parked and you can sell them easy.
Dont go for Fleischmann because the suffer under Zinc corrosion -
not all but many...
Jensen is also a good advice!

I agree with the Märklin 4095’s and 4097’s, BUT some of those also suffer from zinc pest (mostly the older, colorful ones). Same goes with the dynamo covers on the newer ones.
I have a Jensen 35, it's overhead but it's a single acting engine. I usually call single acting engines
spitters, cause they do. There is one by Wilesco called the D14, they look like this,

I think those are called D141 Work Station.

Lol!....thanks Jim for the fix..a used D10 that I picked up for nearly pocket change showed up early today...so I am actually looking for #3....the D10 was a bit long in the tooth but a good cleaning improved it to quite respectable.
I did find the eccentric was loose and no longer running the slide valve...an easy fix but likely why it was taken out of service and sold on the cheap.
As I have so little invested I plan to modify it extensively!...to be continued....

Which is good piece of advice, imho!
The real question, however, is, if you want to buy a steam engine of recent production date (Wilesco, Mamod or Jensen... = grey sin)
or if you would like to venture out into historic steam engines (Märklin, Doll, Schoenner... = pitch-dark tarry sin).
You can find smaller and simpler varieties of fixed cylinder engines (which are not necessarily double-acting...) by Bing or Falk or Falk-Bing which come relatively cheap...

Don't forget to look out for Empire engines, as they are typically solid builds, many with fixed cylinders, and not uncommonly built as single action. B30 & B31 come to mind here.

Thanks for the offer!....I am making investment in 2-3 sizes of BIX burners and pipe and valves to run them. Also I am afraid of old electronic heaters around metal boilers and water!
Your new equipment would be fine, but at this time I am trying to avoid electronic boilers...I know some folks really prefure them...
