steam pressure?

Hi all, I have a new Mamod Centurion and just fitted a pressure gauge.
Its reading 40 psi,is that correct?

Is the safety valve blowing? That appears high for normal running. Most toy steam engines run fine with 10 to 20 PSI.
If it takes that much pressure, you might have binding or valve timing might be off.

I believe @Jim has a Centurian. Only thing I can think of if the SV isn’t blowing is an uprated valve, but I don’t think they’d put a 40 psi valve on, maybe 20-25 at the most...

Did you buy it new? The instructions may say what the SV is supposed to blow off at.

Besides what's already been said, there is always the chance that you have a faulty gauge that doesn't read correctly.

year old,been run just a few times. The ins.dont mention the pressure as how would you know what it is without a gauge?

I couldn’t remember if they came with a certificate stating that the boiler was tested and blow off pressure.

Well, if the gauge is right that it’s at 40 PSI (definitely possible being gas fired), it should have lots of power. Got any other Mamod SV’s to swap it with and see if they blow off at a different pressure? Or an air compressor with regulator to check the gauge?

I know this engine is silver soldered not soft,so could that be because of higher pressure?

If you could show a picture of the valve it would help with identifying.
The standard mamod SV is a 15psi release.
The uprated is 25psi release.
There are / have been 40 psi release valves but these were an aftermarket item.

Here is the Centurion valve on the bottom. A big difference in tension??

I know the Centurion boiler is silver soldered as i had the Challenger roller with the same boiler as it has reheating tubes underneath.
I think the safety valve blew off around 25-30PSI if memory serves me right.
