USS Monitor Steam Engine built by Ray HasBrock
« on: June 16, 2026, 01:45:00 pm »
Hello All
Need some help in Locating Ray Hasbrock's model of the USS Monitor Steam Engine and thought
someone here may know it's location or where abouts.
The Mariners Museum in Newport News Virginia has the real engine recoverd from the depths
of the Atlantic 25 years ago  and are restoring it. They called me and asked me about the model
since I was a friend  of Ray when he was with us.
I know his estate models were sold at the Cabin Fever Auction in Pennsylvania about 10 years ago, including
his Monitor Engine .
can anyone point me in the direction of who to contact, or have you seen the model recently ?

here is a pic that ray sent me 20 years ago
Thanks for any help !

Rich

I would be willing to bet that Gil will know who has this amazing Gem now, but I think he is away at the Cool Springs Hot Air Engine Expo show, so may not be able to respond right away?!?!

Hi Rich,  I don't recall who bought Ray's Monitor Engine.
I called Gary Schoenly (Cabin Fever) and he doesn't recall or have a record.

Wish I could be more helpful. If it should surface within my sight, I will let you know.

For those of you who are unaware, Rich Carlstedt is the engineer who built a truly accurate operational scale model of the Monitor Engine.

Enjoy,

Gil

Thanks for those videos Gil ..... AMAZING!!!

There are a couple of more very interesting ones, much shorter too, that are to be found on the Mariner's Museum YouTube channel.

Rich is really quite the guy, and offers very insightful and educational talks!

While we're at it, we probably ought to link these two follow up videos that show the model in more detail with more direct description of functions:

Part 1:

Part 2:

This is all just truly amazing!

What a total genius was John Ericsson, and what a master detective and engineering design sleuth is Rich Carlstedt!!!

Thank You Gil and Stoker !
Your responses are heart warming and appreciated.
Gil, going further by asking Gary for help is above and beyond normal and reflects your support
of the hobby and assisting in sharing information speaks well of your commitment to our hobby
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

As a follow up . the Mariners Museum is trying to ascertain the Monitors Steam Engine interpretation
history  and in this case, Ray's ability to define the engines construction over 30 years ago
Thanks fellow and thanks for the video references
Beside my lecture, the Mariners Museum has planned on a 4 part video series on Monitors engines.
Part one was released with "Steam" as the subject, since many folks do not understand what Steam is  ?
The balance will be on operation of the engine. Even though I helped film their questions, I do not know what the content will be about at this time .
They spent 4 days in my shop asking questions .. so i am also looking forward to it as well.

Rich

PS while typing this I was informed that the second video of the 4 part series has been posted, so I guess I will be watching it to see if I screwed up  ??

Seriously , They did not use a script, it was all off the cuff so I do not know what they were focused on other than information on the engines operation

So will be watching it right now  ! !!!   Thanks Stoker
