Who are the suppliers of kits in North America?
« on: January 30, 2021, 03:25:44 pm »
Greetings all,

I currently have a PM Research kit, and plan on purchasing a few more,,,
But can’t seem to find any other US or N/America based sellers of kits.
The couple others I knew of in the past, seem to have closed shop.

The UK kits are great but with exchange and shipping, they start to get really $$$

I’m looking for cast iron casting kits to build.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ken J

Welcome aboard Ken  :)

I´d suggest that you check out Graham Industries...if you aim for machined kits.

https://www.grahamind.com/store/

If you intend to machine them yourself, i am only aware of PMR when it comes to steam engine kits, eventhough i would assume some castings is available elsewhere as well.

If you wan´t combustion castings, Martinmodels could be a solution as well:

Thanks Jan,

Yes I’m looking to do my own machining.

I like the very different look of that MERY Engine.
Might have to consider that one.

My dream kit is going to be some type of beam engine.
I’m guessing I’ll have to get a job in my retirement and save up my nickels for a Stuart Kit

And,, eventually want to work on a hit and miss kit.

Thanks again Jan,

If you think of anything else please let me know.

Regards,
Ken

Ministeam has some casting kits.. Both steam and hit and miss...there site is a little odd in that you can't see All the kits at once, you have to scroll to the bottom of the main page and select a brand, when that opens than you can select kits from that brand to view. So you have to open each brand to see if they offer kits...its a little clunky but I think they carry PM reasearch as well as Stuart and Gallaway and a few others.

Yes of course, how stupid of me to forget MiniSteam  ::)

Had my mind so twisted around manufacturers, of which i know so little, since i don´t do kits myself, that i completely forgot about retailers.

Quite a few kits to find in there as well:

Thanks all,

So checking some of the suppliers,

500$ to thousands is typical for some of the nicer kits?

When I watch Gil’s videos at the cabin fever expo, and all the engines on display at different people’s tables, it seams many people have many thousands of dollars into there collection.

I wonder what I can get for one of my kidneys???

Maybe I’ll beg on one of the busy city corners....

                my sign will say.....

            PLEASE HELP

      Need Money for Steam Kits!!

Does anyone ever do a group buy for kits?

Cheers all,

Ken

Ken, you might not need those expensive plans, and possibly could keep both kidneys, if you take a slightly different path.

There´s loads of bar stock drawings out there, and drawings is MUCH cheaper than drawings accompanied by castings.

J.E.Howell plans is definitely worth a look, and John-Tom (mainly steam i think) has quite a few as well, of which quite a few is free of charge:
