Wilesco D15 vs D455/456?
« on: February 02, 2021, 03:57:14 am »
I keep finding models I was unfamiliar with. The D455 is readily available and to a lesser extent also the D456, However I don't see a single D15 for sale (right now) Wilesco's always seem plentiful to me. I know this is a discontinued model and that it comes mounted on a base with an accessory and more elaborate steam pipe routing AND a steam control valve... What is unclear to me is if the cyl/rod/flywheel assembly is any different than a D455?
Wileso does not seem to stock this part assembly any longer...

I believe they have the same engine , Wilesco used that assembly on a lot of their products , D320 steam lorry , D305 fire truck...ect , it is a good runner for the most part.
here is a D455 I did awhile back.

Same Wilesco D10 engine on both, 250ml/100mm boiler/flywheel on the D15 and 500ml/80mm in the D455.
Cheers

I Highly suspected the D455 used a D10 piston/valve assembly and also the same flywheel.  What makes this engine stand out to me is most Wilesco stationary models have a pedistal the cyl is mounted on then 2 bearing pillars the flywheel mounts to...then the only thing between these two points are the piston rod and valve rod....I have often wondered if you moved the cyl assembly in the clearance mount holes and also the flywheel in the clearance of its mount holes that you may alter valve timing just a little?...be interested to see if this adjustment would change the running any noticeable amount?
So the unique feature other than vertical orientation is the casting that ties the Cyl/valve assembly to the flywheel at a fixed distance....I have a idea on a custom build for this model that Might be fun!
Thanks for the video st paul!....your mods got that D455 running smooth and sweet...I see you turn the electric heater down low and the D455 just ticks over....I am warming up to Edison heat ;)

Ministeam has D455 brand new for$199....best price I have found on a new one. There is not a single used one on eBay currently!
It must be a less popular model? Or folks are hanging on to them...I finally found one D15 in uk, it would be about USA $440 plus shipping :o
I want to take one apart for custom build so I hope something used pops up.

Most people who have any version of the D455 really like them , and the used ones on Ebay seem to ask as much as new from mini-steam here lately.
I have never seen a used D15 come up for sale on EBay.

Good to know...Thanks! The mini steam option is starting to look atractive...or I could buy the engine assembly only I think for $74 plus shipping and do my own boiler and steam pipe work...hmmm
