Wanted / Weeden safety valve
« Last post by parallelmotion on April 15, 2026, 08:48:52 pm »
Anyone have a spare Weeden safety valve--the spring loaded kind? Either for sale or swap; I have some other Weeden & Wilesco parts for swap if you need something. Thanks.

Heya all, it seems I got a bit lucky finding these somewhat mislabeled on eBay. These are 2 live steam HO locos and a traction engine, made by LS LOC. I am very much looking forward to steaming them soon, but i am missing the burner  for the stevens rocket, and was hopeful that someone might have one, and could provide dimensions for it, so I may remake it! Also missing a corner to one of the displays, I am having trouble finding that too, but I have what I need to make that if I can't find one off the shelf. Gotta clean up the displays a bit, they clearly spent some time in musty storage haha!

A family member a few states away just received our Christmas card a couple weeks ago, so the USPS is failing for us too. I could go on and on…

Well, USPS has really dropped the ball on me this time and I am beyond frustrated.  I have (or had) a Weeden No.157 (kind of rare?) coming to me from Scottsdale, Arizona.  It made it to Phoenix Regional Distribution Center and hasn't moved in ~7 days.  Today USPS Informed Delivery finally allowed me to submit a missing mail request.

I have no hopes it will be found but hope the seller does his thing as the sender to get the insurance. The default $100 won't cover the whole cost but it will come close.  Though I don't want the insurance, I want the engine!!

My brother bought two engines from this collector, a Weeden No.670 (no governor/throttle version) & No.665 - both 100% complete and in immaculate condition.  Actually, he bought his about two days after the No.157 was sent and has them already on his display self!

Sounds like a little dimensional finesse wins the day!

I suppose you could call it that! Looking back its a bit funny how this pressure valve stumped me but I have to say has been fun figuring out something new :-)

A little update.  I got in my 5mm sight glass from McMaster-Carr, which is a bang on replacement of the original one (that broke during disassembly).  Even if I didn't bust it, I would likely have replaced it, shinny new glass always looks nice.

Other than worrying about the threads on my pressure valve, I believe I have its seal all sorted.  Unless I find something better, which is doubtful, my 5mm OD x 3mm ID (wall thickness 1mm) Flexible Silicone tubing cut to a hair over 1mm in length is working well.  I did buy some 2mm brass bar stock off Amazon, which fit perfectly into the center of my p/v stem.  The original brass bar in the p/v was just slightly undersized, IMO.  It kept wanting to slip into the seal.  I snapped a new bar of the Amazon stuff and filed the length to fit, so it was long enough to be just over the edge of the seal but not so long as to touch the sides of the inner valve wall.

Its hard to get a clear photo but you should see how the silicon seal isn't touching the inner valve wall, nor is the brass pin touching the wall but the pin is just long enough to give max downward pressure without slipping into the seal.  After a steam up test, zero leaking from the stem.

Very nice excellent find and smooth running engine I'm glad you're able to find a date on it too that means so much to engines When there's no markings in their odd balls So what you have is a pre-war Excellent steam engine!!!
