High Temp Clear Coat

Anyone ever use high temp clear coat to keep polished brass from tarnishing?

Was it successful?

Hi Jim, I don't know if they have improved this stuff and they likely have since the temp ratings are considerably higher than they were. The VHT was claimed good for 500 degrees F.

The old VHT clear was never perfectly clear in my experience. It was always a little hazy.

I would be very interested to know more if you should try it out on an engine.

G'day Gil,

I hand polished up two of the Demon's chuff pots on Friday that were very badly tarnished (I do wish I had got Geoff to send them to the plater he used....golly I miss him) and have given them three (3) light coats 15 minutes apart in the sun on a very hot day.
It went on very clear, I'm just hoping it works as advertised.

I would assume it will help that they are not exposed to flame, but I imagine the brass will still darken from the temperature change. the good part is it should be an even darkening/aging, and no fingerprints. Looking forward to the results, please keep us updated.

They're looking good right now Jim, I have coated many a brass parts in the past (non-steam) and they have held up well.

I hope you don't mind Jim, but here's the largest one Geoff made at the time, made especially for my #50, he used to ask me several times a year where this video was so he could forward it to a potential customer as a sales tool. Ironically, he & Glenn (XL chainsaw) were developing the chuff enhancer and offered to make me one for $75 extra, not really knowing how much off an improvement it would make...& for the extra cost I told him no, I don't need one, he built it anyway & sent it with the chuff pot @ no charge, what a nice bloke.  :)

I wonder how a demon chuff pot would look blued Fleischmann style (purple-blue look) I have a small brass one I bought second-hand… Scott told me he had the bluing recipe, but said it was top-secret  :)

I have a friend who hot blues (with bluing salts) rifle barrels, not sure if you can blue brass?
