Sorry for keep asking these stupid questions. My Steam Wagon probably needs new washers on the safety valve (water filler) and the whistle. The safety valve looks to be 1/4" and might be a rubber 'O' ring. The whistle doesn't look as if it has a metal washer which doesn't seem right to me. Looking at ebay the washers all seem to be fibre. Is this correct?
Thanks
Brian
Hi Brian, there's no stupid questions mate....ask away!
Yes, they are some sort of fibre washers.
I have used O rings, and also cut some out of gasket material (from auto shops) and also used leather.
They are easy to make if you have some old leather from a belt or a pair of boots etc laying around the house.
If you use an O ring, use the tightest fitting one that you have.
Thanks for that, I assume you mean the steam whistle as well?

Yes Brian, same for the whistle as well.
It works out a lot cheaper making your own.
Rubber o-rings do work but they seem to fail on a lot of loosening and retightening. I find that dark gray automotive high temperature gasket paper works the best. I have a leather punch with different sizes so I can make a nice fit.
