  The Jensen #45 arrived yesterday & I was able to get on it right away , here is what we have...

  this is ugly...
  
  
  
  old asbestos , carefully removed.
  
  
  
  I think this was called Mica sheet / anyways it disintegrated when opened up.
  
  
  
  a little bead blasting performed.
  
  
  
  
  special dollies made for hammering out the dents.
  
  
  
  
  And now the restoration begins.

  When I tried (unsuccessfully) to remove the ceramic heater bolt, it snapped off although I oiled it & heated repeatedly, I had enough post left to thread & make a suitable extension.
  
  
  
  since one of the sight glass porthole threads was weak & one of the top whistle/SV ports was also damaged I decided to make 4 new brass bushings for a much stronger (lifetime) boss.
  
  
  
  All soldered in place now
  
  
  
  flywheel polished up a bit

  after

• You’ve got some great skills Bruce, thanks for documenting this one. This would have probably been a parts/scrap engine to most, but being it has history and childhood memories it’s a good one to save.

  That is the only reason I decided to look at it...and ultimately take on its restoration, its apparently more than just a beat up old Jensen #45 needing a lot of attention , its a cherished childhood memory that the owner intends to pass down to the next...and next generation , hopefully when I'm done , it Will perform as designed for those generations & look good doing it 😊👍

• Freshly downloaded video of the progress...I need to find some mica for the heat shield between the ceramic heater & metal base under the boiler. I also need the cylinder assembly.

  possibly , I have located an original but it has cracks in the cylinder (as many of them do) but might possibly have something better in the works.

• Ok folks , I have had another weekend in the shop finishing this up , here are some more photo's
  
  I had an old (age appropriate) cylinder assembly from a Jensen #35 that I used for this #45, it is a 1/2" bore vrs the original 7/16" bore & required much modification, I put in a longer connecting rod shaft (Andy @ Jensen helped me with that) I had to nip the piston down a bit & I made a custom crank head & pin for it.
  
  
  
  
  
  
  here is the difference between the 2 shafts
  
  
  
  the original heater cracked & a replacement was installed
  
  
  
  
  plenty of modern heat shield mat'l was used, Jensen also helped me with the modern Mica heat shield they use in the belly heaters (brown disc)
  
  
  
  
  A new tag was made, original vrs new tag
  
  
  
  
  I am still waiting for the Nickel platers to get done with the sight blocks & protector plate , but I have "borrowed" a sight glass set up from another engine temporarily & have put at least 2 hrs run time on this engine now , the paint is turning a little off color right at the heat line (like they all do) but otherwise is running very well & I am happy with it so far.
