I would believe sewingmaschine oil leaves little-to non residue/gue.
For the most part I consider sewing machine oil to thin, unless built to really tight tolerances I don't think it has much staying power.

Sew machine oil is thin for sure. So using this would demand close attention.
Anyhow, I wil stick to the
Usual lub-oil.
I like to use synthetic clock oil that comes in the needle oiler tubes or Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-20 or 0W-16. Both are light weight oils and hold a good film. And... they don't gum up.
I'm a big fan of Keith Appleton's 'mix' for everything external, great stuff! Been using it for years now -
