Hi Bruce,

Raining in Indiana, it rained most of the time we were in Tywyn with just enough sunshine to keep us optimistic.  We were at the Talyllyn Railway because a friend of ours decided to celebrate his birthday by hiring one of their trains for a driver experience day and asked about 30 relatives and friends along for the ride.  We had a great time travelling along the about 7 miles of track between service trains for most of the day.  It was a bit of tiring weekend though, his birthday was on the Friday before the weekend of the Cardiff Model Engineering Steam Rally.  We assumed our friend and a couple of mates wouldn't be attending as they usually do, but no!  They intended to drive to Cardiff on the Saturday morning,  fair enough they do have a good Hog Roast in the evening.  Then another complication, it might be difficult to believe the CMES has a member who lives in Japan and for the last 9 years has visited us on our Rally, again not much of a problem however he was going to bring a steam model locomotive to run on our garden railway and he would be there on Saturday morning.  As I am supposed to be in charge of the GR I thought I needed to be there.

Tywyn is about 140 miles from Cardiff and for most of the way the A470 is used which is the main drag up through the centre of Wales.  A bit like your Route 66, well sort of, if R66 is mostly narrow twisting roads with very steep sections they have a lot in common. As far as I know there hasn't been a song written about the A470 in either language that is spoken here. How about 'Go, Go, Go on the four seven oh' which I think commuters would alter to 'Slow, Slow, Slow on the 470.

We started from Tywyn at 05.00 hrs and arrived at the CMES by 08.30 hrs in time for the bacon sarnies they serve at breakfast, this was a good time travelling none stop in out 20 year old camper van, we were ahead of the game!  Our Japanese member arrived along with a friend and they played on the GR and took instructions on how the drive one of the society's two electric trams.  A bit of a video which was all I managed to take.

After leaving the club on Sunday afternoon we had the official opening of our own garden railway which retrospectively might not have been a good idea as SWMBO and myself were knackered! Still in theory we have a couple of quiet weeks ahead of us.

Take care.

Tony.

Thanks for sharing this video Tony.

I got my Talyllyn membership back (& more) with the £20 discount for members on the WHR Past, Present & Future weekend pass, plus a free return trip to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Managed to catch the Thursday evening running on the Llechfan Garden Railway but no time for a ride on the Talyllyn railway this time round.
