Stephenson's Live Steam Rocket Science
« on: May 29, 2020, 05:14:53 pm »
I've always loved the look of Stephenson's Rocket, and I finally found a 3.5" gauge live steam one.

Never knew that they were so big.

And it even came with 25' of extra track.

Nice acquisition. If the extra track is troubling you send it to me. ;)

They are fine for what they are but don't expect a world class 3.5 in engine. The boiler capacity is small giving short run times.
The plastic gas tanks are a death trap but metal replacements are available.
The gears and slip eccentrics need to be watched and kept tightened or they will fall apart.
the burner tends to foul up easily and needs to be cleaned regularly.

Does yours have the safety valve with the filler or in the steam outlet?

Thanks for your comments.

Think I'll keep the extra track for myself. Is that wrong?

I know about the short run times. Have to watch water consumption, too.

No fear about the gas tank; it came with a metal replacement one.

I'll keep an eye on the gears and eccentrics; didn't know about that.

Safety valve is in the steam supply, and steam vents through the "boiler breather".

The more I look at it, the more I like it.

Bonus: SWMBO thinks it's cute.😁

I have a couple of them and found them to be good runners, I demonstrated one of them to a local Scout troop indoors and it ran for just over 20 minutes.

That's a long run time! Hornby said that they run for about 8 minutes.

I hope mine is as long-lived as yours.

You need a flatbed car now, so you can haul that little gem after the Hornby  ;D

I've been thinking of making a passenger coach, but a flat car is a better idea. I've already made one for my Rob Roy;

I just need a smaller one for this.

How big is this?
If I had the storage space... And the money... I'd have a few more engines.
