My AVG scan says this link for gmail availability has malware that it had to sequester.
This one: checkgmailavailability  I recommend against using it.
I believe the safest way is to simply go to gmail and you will know right away if your requested name is taken.

go to www.gmail.com

You will be able to try user names until you find one available that you like.
For example, I just now set up JensenSteamEngines@gmail.com It took me about 30 seconds.
