My first car was a 1951 Packard 300 with an ultramatic transmission. It started in 2nd and automatically shifted to 3rd. Low range had to be selected and there was no automatic clutch into 2nd/3rd, just a big thump. Had a 327 straight eight that would turn almost 3000 rpm stock but it sure was smooth. Inside was like a living room sofa with a backseat that would put a smile on a young man's face. What a car - should never have gotten rid of it.
