Another steam engine shaped object
« on: April 06, 2022, 04:01:37 pm »
I was given another strange looking homemade steam engine contraption as a birthday present.  I’m pretty sure I saw this one on eBay recently.  It looks like the second cylinder was ported to be a compound cylinder then plugged and incompletely reworked to be an air pump.  The stroke is approximately  1.2”, the cylinders are roughly 1.25” with 2.2 inches of stroke ability.

The engine was make runnable after some quick modifications to the working valve cylinder.  My plan is to run it on steam so I started by building a 2” throw crank to use the entire cylinder and it ran fine on air.  I am calculating the bore for a primary cylinder and will sleeve to fit.  The valve cylinder was poorly made, too small, binds and will need to be replaced.  Also need to address bearings.

The cylinders are now sized for a 2” throw along with the 1.2” bore.  The crank is now parallel with the cylinders. My plan is to move the steam chest to top of the cylinders as in the previous build.

Made a new eccentric and slide valve parts.  I marked off the steam ports and getting ready to cut.

An unusual configuration.

Nice work on getting it running.

Finishing the walnut base.  Decided on a planked floor.  I’ll clad the cylinders while I varnish the base.  I can’t deicide if I should stain it or just used a tinted varnish.

Shimming and adjusting the first stage.   I have an eBay governor I bought some time ago I thought would look nice.

Engine test on compressed air. Two 1.2” cylinders and a 2” stroke puts out some serious torque. Ready for first run on steam.

Here it is the first time seeing live steam.  It probably needs a boiler injection pump and a water preheater.

The rear piston was hitting the cylinder cover in the previous post.  I also made a second set of pipes so it can be run as a compound engine so my boiler can keep up.
