Jean Comby vertical
« on: June 04, 2019, 03:28:00 pm »
Saw this on EBay France, it looked a bit grim sans flywheel and burner but seemed like it had potential, I made the seller a (very low!) offer which was accepted and it duly arrived looking like this:

It was in fact rather better than the EBay photos, all sound and mainly cosmetic work to do.  I machined a Mamod flywheel down by a few mm diameter and depth to match that on my small JC horizontal engine, made a new crank as the original was too short to go right through the Mamod boss, found a burner of unknown origin in the spares box and fabricated a chimney, again based on the small JC horizontal.  Chucked some paint at it plus a bit of brass bling and this is the result:

Not fired up yet as I want the paint to cure a bit more but she runs quite nicely on air, I will include a 'first steaming' video in a week or so.

First steaming today, wobbled about too much on the turntable so I've filmed it running on a solid surface:

Looks to be plenty smooth and stable running on the counter, and beautiful besides.

Nice engine .... really eye-catching!

Not bad for a "grim" engine. Well done!
