Alcohol blow torch
« on: February 19, 2022, 08:18:17 am »
I'm looking for an alcohol blowtorch to use as a heat source for an
engine with a horizontal flue type boiler. It should have a robust
horizontal blowtorch type flame.  The name LENK appears a number of
times on EBAY.  Any suggestions?

I added a photo and link to a sample EBAY listing

Maybe to small for your needs, but thought I would post. This is a kit and has a "well" to put alcohol prime in and the prime preheated the valve for gasification of liquid alcohol.
Also the torch nozzle is Vertical but ask a kit it possible could be assembled horizontal?

Thanks.  I suppose the flame could be redirected by an elbow
of some sort.  I will hold out for a horizontal burner.

Bonjour Wayne,
I would kindly suggest you to look for a Saito burner like this one :

Raphael....thank you.  It certainly looks good.

I'm going to hold out a bit for something vintage
I can turn to my needs.  The Saito is almost too easy.

Wayne, does it have to be alcohol? I know it's cheaper to run then butane but
refillable butane tanks take less space.

Alcohol, yes, because it burns so clean.

Vintage blowtorch to replace the bomb of
a gasoline blowtorch that came with this
engine built in 1926.

If I'm unsuccessful in my search, I'll have
to consider other fuels and delivery systems.

Leans against the saito suggestion, but i like my TMY burners a lot...
Very efficient for their size :)

Saito's are too easy and....expensive.

I looked for sellers of the TMY burner, but no joy.
I presume it is alcohol fired because the fuel tank
burner combo needed heating before firing it up.
Maybe I'm wrong.  It did make a strong flame! How
much do they cost?

Yes it is an alcohol burner, and this was fired on a European equivalent to the American "Everclear" grain alcohol.
The TMY burners were decomissioned many years ago, but sometimes pop up on Ebay.

Wayne:

Here is one I had in my bits box. Diameter of the nozzle is ~1”.

If you think this would work, PM me your address and I will send it to you.

Charlie...I'm overwhelmed.  It's alcohol fired?  Be still my heart.

I'm onboard,

Frankly, I am not sure.  I suspect it uses Coleman Fuel/White Gas.

It came with some other things.

It's very well made (solid brass).

Other Forum Members may know better than me.

Well, I'm really looking forward to working with Charlie's
burner of unknown origin.  I think it will be perfect for
my 1926 mill engine w/horizontal-flue boiler.

In the meantime, I had a LENK alcohol blowtorch on the way
from EBAY.  It needed a bit of teflon tape to seal threads,
and I had to learn to get it to work right.  Now I have it
working as I want and will try it soon.  I added a photo
and a very dark video (so you can see the flame) of it working
as it should.  Turns out, it needs to be pretty hot and you
have to have a light touch on the valve, but it does BURN!

Happy steaming,
Wayne
