Wayne:
Measure the diameter of the ball bearing. That will give you a good idea of the size of the spring you need. Then you will just need to make an educated guess of the length.
Search "micro springs" on eBay and you should find something that will work.
Ironically, a new video was posted today of a guy operating a water pump on a Doll Steam engine.
