HELP .....please ! Vintage Marklin 2 cylinder
« on: May 08, 2021, 10:23:26 am »
Hello everyone,

I have just acquired this old Marklin twin cylinder steam engine.

It will be delivered in a week or so. I am pretty much completely new to the model steam engine world, and definitely need some help and will gladly accept any guidance and information offered.

Can anyone identify the exact model and year of manufacture?

Is that the correct smokestack for this model?

From looking at other similar models, it looks like the 2 centre oiler caps are missing, and have been replaced by screws, or should it be like this ? ( If they are missing, does anyone know how I could find some replacements, same thing goes for the smokestack if it’s not the correct one ? )

Please forgive me if I don’t use the correct technical terms, after 38 yrs in the airplane world, I get it !! Lots of new stuff to learn 🙂

I will test all movement and valves using compressed air to start with, and after a gentle but thorough wipe down, cleaning and oiling, then depending on the linkages, and general state of boiler, fire it up on a low steam pressure for an initial test run.

It doesn’t look too bad in the photos, and I only intend to clean off any dust and dirt, and easily removable rust, and carefully polish it. ( No repainting or restoring to original, just accept that it has acquired plenty of youth !! ).

So, there we go, if you can offer any information, guidance or help in any way, I will be very grateful,

Martin, London. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Hi, the Boiler and (repainted) Platform is Maerklin 4098/8
the compound engine from Maerklin 4158. It is a so called
"marriage" and has not much value for a collector (my opinion)
to be sure 100% I should see the platform from below!

I'm afraid I have to agree with tenniV11 about the marriage of two different Marklin engines. The chimney, while Marklin, also doesn't belong to either one. Do you have any chance to return it?

Brilliant, thank you so much, I really appreciate the very quick response, and your appraisal of this model.
Based on your information, I have  successfully cancelled and refunded this purchase.

I am very, very, grateful for your expert help, and based on this instructive experience, I will be much more careful when looking at a future steam engine purchase.

This hasn’t put me off at all, I still have a desire for a nice vintage model, but wont be so impatient next time !!

Thanks again 👍

Good news Martin!

Assume this was the engine in question?

Fortunately there´s quite a bit of knowledge accumulated inbetween the many members here, so far the most steam toys and models can get a quick ID confirmation and appraisal :)
Cheers

Hello Jan,

Yes, that was the machine, I negotiated a pretty reasonable discount, but was just too eager !

I am super grateful for the advice from the members here, and will be doing plenty of research, before looking at more specialist sales, auctions , model steam fairs, etc along with getting advice from the experts beforehand !

So much to learn , but that’s the joy of any new hobby !

Kind regards,
Martin

Welcome to the forum. While it may not be an original engine, you sure went for a big one for being new to toy/model steam!  :)

Hello Nick,

thanks for the welcome !

Well, I guess so 🤔, in at the deep end! 😁 , but a 2 cylinder Marklin is what I was really looking for.
Once we all get back to international travel again, I will be trawling the toy fairs in
Europe and US, you never know, something might appear from a dusty attic somewhere !! 🤞

atb ..... Martin

Welcome to the Forum.

I hope you will join us often.

And I hope you build a great collection.

I recently listed a good starter engine on eBay; a Mamod S.E.3.

Hi Martin.

Have you managed to acquire an engine after the return?
