Metric pipe threads
« on: December 26, 2021, 09:34:47 am »
So it doesn’t take long befor I ran into metric pipe threads. It’s been a long time since I was able to be very active in the machine shop but now I quickly ran into metric pipe threads dealing with small steam engines especially out of the USA.  40 tip ME seems to be a common size. I just have not dealt with thes and others and my machinery manual is 65 miles away in my sons shop . At one point I found a common tap and dies set for the usual small pipe threads and I thought  I saved but I apparently did not I do remember it was very expensive for the number of pieces in it. I can already see the need for either some adaptor or custom fitting. I can make anyting round one way or another and tap appropriate holes or thread pipe. So eat is needed for these.  Sizes and drills. Somewhere whittworth was noted but that one just goes too far back for me. I can’t remember what they are. Mainly I need info on what hardware I need. I can get the fitting for he engine or boiler but I’ll have to come up with something to adapt to our standard things I can even get 1/16 pipe plugs and taps. Not common but they are still used in some race car cranks for oil hole to the main and rod bearings  more often AN  fittings are adapted to metric but I haven’t found the adaptors as I really don’t know what the terminology is to ask for.
