Questions and help needed on a Stuart 10V
« on: September 08, 2020, 01:18:15 am »
After getting 10V I started looking on the web I see that
Stuart now puts Drain Cocks on the 10V. What is the purpose
of the Drain Cocks? I saw that some 10V’s had the Drain Cocks
on the side and some had it over the flywheel. Than I notice some
cylinder covers had 6 bolts and on the ones made today had 5 bolts.
On mine the bolt went right threw the area that the Drain Cocks were
to be installed if you used the side on the cylinder and that is why
you see the Drain Cocks placed over the flywheel on some 10V’s.
My oldest Stuart catalog is 1989 shows 5 bolts on cylinder cover, so I
know my 10V must have been made before 1989.  Should I install
Drain Cocks and Oil Cups? I need some help to see if need to install
these items on my 10V.

Drain cocks allow the engine to get rid of the water that is condensed while the cylinder gets up to steam operating temperature.
It is requir3d on full size engines, not so much on models.
The same can be said for oil cups. Personal choice.

Need to .... No, but you might want to as they are nice features to have, and allow you to operate your engine in a more prototypical manner.

I agree with Stoker on this.

My 10V will not have drain cocks, but it may have oilers.

My choice. Yours, too.😇

I think that I will go with the oilers for now and I can always add the drain cocks later.
I am looking at making the oilers on my taig.
Thanks for your help on my 10V.

Bonjour Carl,
I fully agree with our steam colleagues, drain cocks are nice looking but not mandatory at all. On several of my 10V - D10, I have, others have not and for the one which have not, I gently help them at the begining of the steam opening to remove the condensed water.
Furthermore, opening the drain cocks in a hull is not obvious at all and generates dirt, little example here (test at about 15 PSI) :

They can also have a tendency to leak reducing performance.
