Stanley steamer

Charlie if you are reading this i`m not really one to put a name on anything but if you have to call something call it "prototype" because that`s what it really is. Have got the feeling that it`s going to be too heavy for the small engine might have to re-engine or make another out of ali.

Sorry Jon not at the moment so far it has only been run on air was hoping to run it on steam this week but i`m unsure what will happen and to be on the safe side i think i will try and make myself a set of rollers certainly wont run it in the house

Hi Ron,

That is a remarkable piece of work... very well done.

I do share your concerns that the small vee engine is not going to be power enough for it and a larger one may well be needed even if rebuilt built from Ali.

The only issue with a bigger engine is the need for more steam, hence a more powerful boiler will be needed...catch 22 again.

If you do feel like going to a slightly larger engine then I may be able to help... take a look at the 2 attached PDF's

These engines I originally designed to power a couple of Peter Angus' 45mm gauge garden steam locomotives and work at around 40-45psi.

If you fancy having a go at building one then I can search out the complete drawing set for either version and get them to you... I can also provide gun metal castings for the cylinders.

Sandy that`s a very kind offer but think that`s going to the opposite end i.e. to large. There is one in the vapeur  et model site under --other engines-- that is very similar to the ones you designed the bore is only 6mm and they claim it will pull 2kgs a double acting twin. the problem with the Stanley was you need a screw to adjust the pressure on the clock spring to keep the worm engaged other wise too much and the worm locks too little and the worm just spins (now fixed).  On the other hand it may just be worth making a car platform with all the trimmings steering and so on and when perfected make a body shell the 1907 Buick  very similar to the Stanley except for the bonnet so really need to think

Hi Ron,

No worries my friend, it was just a possible option... I was not sure just how big/small the Stanley was.
A double actin twin would certainly need a bigger boiler though... so lots of extra work involved.

Have you considered putting a support bearing on the back end of the worm shaft... that would hold the worm engaged and would eliminate the need for the spring hence removing sideways pressure on the drive shaft... just a thought!!

Yes there are some great designs on the Vapeur site... including a couple of my boiler designs in the 'Julias de Waal' section.

I just found this post Ron as I learn how to navigate this new venue.

I have to agree with Charlie, this is a beautiful work of art oh, it's breathtaking to look at. Even as a static display is beautiful.

Thanks all for your kind remarks still waiting for the safety valve to arrive so i can try another steam trial. Bruce that video you posted about the Roadster and the Morgan i thought fantastic did make a reply but nothing appeared probably pressed the wrong button. Would be nice if someone would make the Stanley to the same standard don`t know if i`ve got that skill hopefully someone will someday and like i said if i can get it to run for 5mins i will be really happy any more than that  the UK Gov. will charge you road tax.
