Weeden #2 Upright Steam Engine
« on: July 26, 2025, 08:01:07 am »
Here is a show & tell on my Weeden #2 all Brass Engine!

I am temporarily using a reproduction bayonet pressure valve and a lever/plunger from my Big Giant.  Charlie is sending me one that he has extra and it seems my brother has one too.  I have stuff a bit of cork into the top of the whistle hole and used black marker to color it.  I made my own seals for both the engine top & pressure valve bayonet fittings and shored it up with Permatex 59235.  Lastly, I am using my #17 burner to make steam, which is working well.

I think this little #2 is running pretty good!!

Edit: Decided to mix some Testors enamel paint, tried to get it close as I could.

  You've done a beautiful cleanup and a successful re-gasketing.
Your engine runs well - the factory got the de-flashing right.
I'm especially amazed at how responsive the engine is to the
whistle and throttle controls.  I'll bet nobody ran scads of
hard minerally water through it.  Lucky you!

Happy steaming,
Wayne

Thank you Wayne.

There was no scaling / lime deposits to be found.  Inside the tank was amazing clean as was the the engine apparatus.  It was 100% used a bit, since there was carbon on the bottom (from the flame).  Also it had quite a bit of string wrapped around the shaft on the pulley side - so someone had ran it with an accessory during its lifetime.  So someone played with it, took care of it and likely was important to them.

Now she is a self queen (I updated my 1st post with a photo after I did a little paint work on it).

Edit:
After my video, I used a little Teflon tape on the Whistle & Throttle screws.  That completely stopped the leaky/bubbly whistle & throttle and gave me a little bit more power.  Actually, I had to keep a eye on the pressure valve as it started to bubble - so that is telling me I am getting pretty close to max pressure.

I think the piston is suppose to have a brass facade / plate.  Or at least it is grooved like one could be snapped on?  Maybe one day I'll find an original burner or a #1 with its burner.  I am guessing its base is a little larger in diameter, as my #17 burner base seems a little small.

I am also getting early Weeden whistle from my brother, we think it has a whistle cap that I could transplant to the #2's whistle.  If that works, I'll post a photo of it.

I was right.  It was never abused.

That said....shelf queen?  Never to be steamed
again?  Ah, you know you'll have the hankering
to steam it up again someday.  Just a matter of
when!

Well, I mean in my living room so I can see it everyday!!  So not that kind of "don't touch / doesn't work" shelf queen :-)

Mine is in a good place in my cluttered living room,
along with another 10 engines scattered around here and there.
Married to a great wife, she has stuff scattered around too.
Hobby clutter is 'like home' to me.

Here is the #2 with from a early-ish parts #14.  The pressure valve and its whistle cap, photo of the whistle that has a cap that can pop off and be put on the #2 whistle (and others like it).
