James Maiwald Flame Licker/Flame Gulper Engine
« on: August 17, 2020, 08:22:43 pm »
Running my James Maiwald Flame Licker/Flame Gulper is always a pleasure as it starts so easy and I love the sound this engine makes.

NICE !!!  ....  I especially like the controlled flame positioning system, as that seems really critical to get the best out of a vacuum engine.

Thanks Daniel, I reckon James came up with a very clever method with that system of flame control.

Great video Jim, always nice to see one of James' flame lickers in action. The tank at the front of the cylinder head.
Is that a water tank, like for a cooler?

I only have one flame licker, a Solar Engines #3, and it is a dandy, but I find positioning of the flame relative to the port is hyper critical for good performance, and mine offers nothing in the way of precision adjustment, such as does your Maiwald.

I may have to look into this issue and see what I can adapt that might offer an improvement along those lines!?!?

Yes, James added that on when he built mine. It doesn't take long for the water to boil in there.

Daniel, I'm pretty sure it was Rog who worked out a way with his Solar Engines #3 by putting some of that thin magnet (fridge magnet) on the bottom of hie burner so that it wouldn't move around.

Yes and I've done that, which helps to a degree, but isn't the end all be all. There also seems to be a height issue as to how far above the wick the port should be. Perhaps I'll let you inspire me to revisit this issue, in the midst of so many other key projects currently on the front burners here!?!?

I made up one of these Daniel with a fibreglass wick.

I had his boxer twin flamelicker about ten years ago, it was a good runner with a great sound!
