Jensen 50 - 1977!
« on: June 23, 2024, 05:31:56 pm »
I am having an absolute blast playing with this BEAST of a Jensen 50.  The decal states it is from 8-8-1977.

I stopped by Charlie’s today to return some borrowed items from 6-8 weeks ago, and he handed me the Jensen 50 and said borrow it!   I’ve only spectated the Jensen 50 over the last 8 months into my hobby but I’ve been drooling over them since the beginning.

The moment I got home I couldn’t wait to get it setup. Almost within minutes I was getting it ready to run.

Everything runs FANTASTIC, no leaks, water pump is flawless.    Charlie, you took good care of this one!

Thank you so much again for letting me borrow this amazing machine and piece of art, Charlie!  And for you Jensen nerds out there, perhaps you can tell me more about it!

This is just totally AWESOME!

Travis, you have no idea what a lucky boy you are, but even if you do, you really don't!!

Meanwhile, Charlie, what an incredible gesture and amazing amount of trust you show. You are "THE MAN" for certain and for sure!!!

All you really need to know about the Jensen 50 is it was the absolute top of the Jensen production line, and forms the heart of the amazing special-order Jensen 51 of which very few were ever built, mostly for powerplant demonstrators and operations training.

Perhaps from a historical perspective, the Jensen 50 has secured its place as being the steam engine that produced the first ever Nuclear Powered electricity!

At this point, I believe it will be best to let Gil tell you that history via a video that he made a few years back, as seen here:

He truly is da man!   I was just expecting to borrow some more accessories and such, wasn’t expecting borrowing this behemoth !   Was super stoked / excited. And still am.   I still can’t believe I get to play with this thing for a few weeks.  It’s so mesmerizing and satisfying to play with.

The hand craftsmanship on one of these really shows!    Yes, I am definately lucky to have someone with such a huge arsenal of engines to lent and show. I feel very fortunate.        None the less, being borrowed I will take extra good care of it while it’s with me.

Hmmmm, that's funny, I was just considering looking into filling out adoption papers!!!   ;c)

Just as an aside, while terribly disappointed that I didn't make it to Texas for the Total Eclipse, a major factor in that disappointment was the hope that I might have been able to pay Charlie a visit. Perhaps some day I will be so lucky!

I had only run this one once.  I knew that Travis would really get it tuned in.  He is a very fast learner and has a great mechanical mind.  He was able to get the governor fine tuned to work perfectly.

My other J50s is a 2017 (40 years newer than the one I lent to Travis).  I think Jensen only made a few others after my 2017 J50.

Due to space constraints, I will be selling the 1977 version later this year.

Below is a video of them running side by side:

IMHO the pinnacle of Jensen's production was the Jensen 51.  I have passed mine on due to space limitations.  I did make a video while I owned it.

I don't believe that the Jensen 51 (which is really only a #50 seriously tarted up) ever qualified as a "Production" model, as I am pretty sure it was only produced occasionally, by special order. I will agree that the #51 was the pinnacle of Jensen's civilian creations, but I do have to wonder if maybe some of their wartime production wasn't even of more real significance?!?!
