Large Steam Engines Collection (over 2,500 Pieces)
« on: September 29, 2023, 01:05:59 pm »
I was very sad to discover that nobody in my family has any interest in my large collection of steam engines.
I have over 2,500 of them, from very common to very rare, the result of 20 years of researches and restoration. Most of these engines have been already restored.
Not looking to sell individual pieces, but the entire collection, conservatively valued at $499K.

I am just south of Charlotte NC.

Good luck with your sale,I find myself a bit short of the estimated  $500K & honestly can't think of anyone who could, but I've been wrong before.
May want to let an auction house consign them all for you.

Wow so much stuff, so little time!  Now, my biased two-cents.

You know what your engines are worth if sold, for instance,
on EBAY.  Same for auction houses, though the amount to the
seller will be a bit less.  It occurrs to me that it might be
worthwhile finding a person in your area with a good knowledge
of the values-at-sale time of these items, just to be sure.
If you go with an auction house, research their past and current
practices with a fine-toothed comb.  One good thing about auction
houses - they do all the work.

Keep in mind, if you were to donate all or a significant portion
of your collection to a museum they will insist upon the right to
sell any parts they do not anticipate considering for display or
needed for research.  You will, however get a tax write-off of some sort.

My opinions need to be tempered with the fact that I would love
to get a chance at several of the items pictured.  I wonder about
the prizes you haven't shown.

Good luck,
Wayne

Hi Marcel, Nice to see you post here. I believe you got a nice high speed twin cylinder model high speed steam engine from me back around 2012 through ebay.

Gil

If I have the right Marcel, it was this one.

Hello Gil...
Not the right Marcel... Isn't it amazing that it could be several of us with such an unusual first name ?  :)
Beautiful engine...

Thank you for your opinion.
So, as for the "conservative" estimation, I have North of 2,500 pieces. While some low end engines are certainly worth in the $50/100 range, many of them have a value over $200, some of them way North of $1,000. I have in mind triple compression Stuarts, Dart full set train, Twin cylinder Empire and a full range of brand new, in the box, Wilesco engines, all way above the average price of $200 a piece...
So, I might not find someone with this kind of money who is both interested in steam and seeking a good long term investment. Probably a rare specie.
Certainly, the hundreds of engines I have that were made in the 1930's aren't manufactured any longer and will only become more difficult to find.
Remember the price of the Ford T, brand new and what they bring now ? :)

You are so right...
The best solution would be indeed to find someone willing to spend the time to sell the collection via eBay one piece at a time.
I wonder if such a person exists in my area (Charlotte NC).

I personally stopped dealing with eBay when they didn't fight the sales tax charge on used items. The tax has been paid, many times over, and the climbing cost of shipping is certainly a factor.

The best case scenario for all parties involved, would be to find a steam enthusiast who has the kind of money needed for a very safe long term investment.
Certainly the engines made at the turn of the last century will be become more and more scarce.
In the mean time, the stockmarket is most certainly headed for a severe adjustment.

I so appreciate your input.
Thank you !

One cautionary note.  My cousin has been a train collector since the late 1940's.
He has rehabbed/sold trains, and been the largest parts dealer in the mid-Atlantic
region.  This is what he tells me about the hobby.  Nearly every week he hears
of an old train acquaintance who is ill or passed.  Who is replacing those who
are lost?  Not many and nearly no youngsters.  The hobby for vintage and special
trains is not growing.  He says that if you buy a collectible train with the
notion that it is a good investment you will be in for a rude lesson later on.
Maybe the unobtainable expensive engines will always pull those with money to
burn, driving prices up, but for most trains, no.

I know this to be true.  My family was in the antique business for a long time
and hobbies, like fashion, come and go.  I always figure when buying a vintage
toy, like a Marx tin train or a vintage steam engine, that I know I can get at
least half of what I paid for it if I need to sell.  I had fun and fun costs
money.  If I repair one, well, I'll probably get at least what I paid if not
more.  From time to time, I'll hit a home run.

Finally, yes, the EBAY 'taxes' reporting is bad, especially the ridiculously
low number.  For a large collection, if you want to go thru an auction house,
try a modest number and variety of engines to sell to determine how good they
are and how quickly they pay.  Really.  My cousin used one once and they didn't
pay until he called the owner, who he knew personally for a long time.  He was
paid by personal check, then auction house shortly thereafter went down for the count.

My cousins word on what will happen to his collection when he passes, well,
he'll leave his Marx stuff for me but the rest....is his sons' problem to solve.
As for me and my hobbies, same idea.

On the other hand, it will be an exciting sale, I'm sure.

Good Luck,
Wayne

Hello Marcel,

Actually you are the right Marcel. I still have the emails you and I exchanged in 2012 when you acquired the the high speed twin from me. You still have the same address. I don't know if you remember but you even sent me an e-mail thanking me for the $5.00 refund for extra shipping charges I returned to you.

It is easy to understand you not remembering each of the 2500 plus purchases.

I live in Charlotte NC would be glad to help you if I can. Feel free to contact me if you would like. If nothing else would love to come take a look at your collection. I have a fairly large collection of Jensen steam engines and other brands.

I guess it is difficult to sell the whole collection of 2500 pieces to one buyer - not only
because of the amount. 200 $ ea. sounds reasonable but that means half a million $. As a
collector I like to buy one piece after the other and are always searching rare models -
buying a whole collection makes no sense to me. I would sell via an Auction house in numbers
of not more than 250 p. per auction - or Ebay - both take some money.
