Fuel for M91 vertical engine
« on: September 05, 2019, 01:16:26 am »
Hi all, my engine hasn't arrived in UK yet. I think it may take 20 days in all so maybe another 2 weeks?.
Reading all the experience on this forum I have already ordered spare O-rings and a pulley, but I am not sure what fuel to use. Will UK 97 octane unleaded mixed with 5% 2 stroke oil work. I realise the fuel make up from country to country and seasons will vary.or do ineed to use something like Ronson fuel. I certainly don't want to condemn my new engine if I have trouble keeping it going for the want of different fuel.
Thanks Brian

Bonjour Brian,
Jin recommends 97 octane gas and does not mention oil. Personnally, I have used gasoline lighter (very expensive) with 2% of 2 stroke oil, which means just a drop considering the size of the tank (see behind the engine);

I have used almost anything in the M90 so far with no problems- gasoline, white gas(camp stove fuel), lighter fluid...It seemed happy no matter what. I've mixed the fuel with castor oil, synthetic 2 stroke racing oil, and Marvel Mystery oil. I like the mixed 2 stroke oil best so far but I am a far cry from making any comprehensive studies. I've settled on the camp stove fuel for the time being mainly because I bought a gallon and it doesn't sour like ethanol. But, having read Gil's post concerning a product here(branded TruFuel I think) that is non-ethanol pre-mixed fuel and synthetic 2 stroke oil at a ratio of 50:1, I might switch after I run out. I already keep TruFuel on hand for my chainsaw and string trimmer.

Hi as I mentioned my M91 has not arrived yet so I don't know if it comes with any running instructions.
I am now a little unsure of how the engine is lubricated. I assume there is no sump with oil to splash about the insides. Is it intended that you just use an oil can here and there from the outside or are there holes to get oil into the piston bore ?. Obviously vale gear is external.
Regards Brian

Well, Hurric...in my case I put a liberal dollop of oil in the crankcase, with the assumption it will splash/sling a good bit. Top end oiling is by premix fuel/oil, and another liberal dollop on the skirt area of the piston. It seems to work for me so far, but perhaps some of the other fellas might have a better proposition. I think Gil had even contemplated removing some of the CC material to open air for manual oiling...

The engine will come with abbreviated instructions, with, as Raphaël said,  no mention of oiling.

Thanks Benny. I ran mine or the first time today. I just used zippo lighter fluid. I haven’t got it to run for an extended period of time yet. I really haven’t figure out the needle valve adjustment yet. Any tips would be appreciated.

Mine, once running, is complacent at about 5/8 turn out from lightly seated.

Thanks Benny. I added a small piece of tubing to the valve, marked it with a Sharpie and Shazam. Worked great and ran out a full tank of gas (followed by a few more tank fulls). 🤠

I also added a few drops of two cycle oil to each tank full.

Good point, Charlie. Taking my cues from Gil, I also slipped a short bit of tubing over the mixture screw, taking care to mark lightly seated for reference.

Well my M91 arrived yesterday, here in London. So thats 21 days from the day I actually placed the order through Jin. I had to pay an additional £12 in costs to UK Parcelforce. The new engine comes with the rope start pulley fitted and the pull cable which was nice. The engine runs well and the hit and miss operates at a nice speed .i don't feel the need to play about wih springs. It does seem to stop after about 3 minutes running. I then leave it for a couple of minutes and it starts first pull. I will have to investigate . The one mistake I made was I had a mental block and I thought the exhaust fitting was an oiler because I could see the valve stem. I squirted a good bit of oil in there, so you can imagine what happened on first start.
I am not too happy with the wooden box. It raises the C of G too high, so I will reduce it a bit and add in some nice legs that come out the side. But all in all very happy
Brian.
