Hit & Miss engine from Banggood
« on: August 03, 2019, 07:16:50 pm »
Received the engine about a week ago and ran it for about 30 minutes over a period of a few days.

Today i heard a loose metal noise and found that the little roller bearing was coming off and it was loose.
It seemed to have been staked at one point ,but failed.   So i cleaned the parts and used threadlocker on the shaft.
Hope it works.
Another thing i'm curious about is replacing the o ring with cast iron piston rings.. Good or bad idea?

Howdy Gil, and WELCOME to the Forum!

First off, do you know of a source for cast iron piston rings in the correct size of approx. 20 x 1 mm?

I suppose that they might be okay, but I'd worry about the cylinder walls getting worn as I'm not too sure what grade of metal they may actually be themselves. I would suppose bronze piston rings could be a compromise choice, but I've no idea where those may be sourced either.

For now I'm content to keep going with the O-rings as provided. I've already gotten a goodly number of spares for very little money, and the originals have an impressive number of hours on them so far. They are readily changed out by just pulling six screws, so it is no big deal.

All that said, if you can source cast iron or other metallic rings for these little engines, I'm sure a number of folks here would be very interested in hearing about it, knowing the source, and getting feedback on how they work out!

Best of luck and please do keep us in the loop!!!

Welcome aboard Gil !!!

Quite a few of us in here has invested in one (or more) of these Chinese hit and miss engines, so am certain that quite a few of us would be interested in your experience, should you choose to install metal rings in yours.
Cheers

Hi Gil, welcome.  I have gotten many hours so far out of my original rubber O rings on my Microcosm M90 hit and miss...wonderful unit for the money.  Sorry to hear you had a loose bearing, hopefully the threadlocker will fix that.  For what it's worth, Jin of Microcosm is also a member of this forum and many of us are awaiting a vertical engine of his creation...it should be ready to ship soon to a pre-paid 20 or so folks who ponied up $350 in advance.  After it is fully available, it will sell for more than that.  It is kind of cool having a radiator and water pump setup.

cheers and again, glad you could join us.

Concerning the cast iron piston rings these people seem to be able to make any small size ring.

https://rmjmachineworx.com/

Debolt already has random rings sizes

The hit & miss engine is real close to a 7/8 inch diameter ring.

I believe Jin is using cast iron rings in the new vertical project.

Why not just ask him if they are cut to fit the same slot as the o-rings.

If so, perhaps he could send a few.
