And I've got plans for this little guy. Factory is notorious for putting the timing completely off in the rhubarb with these things far as my research can tell, so putting that right is the first order of business. Then I'll run it in a bit, build a generator out of an old RC plane motor, and maybe see what it's capable of. Poke the limits of those viton piston rings(Really?!), see how low and slow I can get it ticking over, that sorta stuff.
What I ultimately want to do with this engine is situate it somewhere prominently in the middle of an N-scale layout...thinking probably one of Woodland Scenics' layout kits such as the Scenic Valley...and have the engine generate the necessary power to run the trains. N-scale trains really don't need much(A DC locomotive pulling a 15 car train will want about 7-9 volts at around 250-350mA) and the layout won't really have room for more than one train, so I don't think it's too unreasonable an ask of the engine. People run LEDs off of them all the time so surely that won't be a big deal.
From what I can gather looking up other people's videos and posts on these little engines, they're incredibly well made, so I'm confident it won't take much to get the engine up to task. I do have to question the piston ring and I'm sure it will be a source of eternal grief until I put a cast iron replacement in there, but beyond that and the factory's inability to time them properly I don't see any issues with it. Will know more in a couple weeks once it arrives, of course.
