Cotswold Heritage Perseus plant
« on: June 16, 2021, 01:36:12 pm »
Hi Guys, I collected this plant today bought last week from a UK auction house.
I can understand how most of it will work including the gas system.
There is one part I am not sure of though. I have included 2 pictures of a copper container with 4 pipes.
I am not sure where the 4 pipes connect in and the exact purpose of the container. the top cranked pipe will connect
into  pipe inside the chimney. The straight pipe at right angles?. And the U shaped pipe with the stop cock ?.
Is this device to separate water from steam for the exhaust smoke and to provide water for the boiler pump?
Am I supposed to fill it with water and use it to top up the boiler. I have seen this devise fitted to other Perseus
plants but I cant see the pipework?
Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian

I own a Perseus plant with one of these built into it.

It is a exhaust trap/chuff pot for the engine exhaust which condenses the steam to water and can by drained by means of using the engine exhaust pressure to empty it into another container.

Connections/operation is as follows:
(using the last photo for reference)
The copper pipe on the side connects to the engine exhuast, the top pipe connects to the chimney by means of a silicon tube with a gap left inbetween both solid pipes i.e so it can be squeezed. The globe valve connection is the condensate drain.

When connected up to the plant the globe valve should be shut when running, to empty the pot when running open the globe valve and squeeze the gap in the silicon tube between the chimney which will force the water through the drain valve.

Hope this makes some sense!! ;D

Thanks Swift Fox for your prompt and informative reply.
Of course there are 3 pipes on the little tank not 4 as I said. I can see how it works now and I will get it running soon and let you know how it runs. That tank with the chimney fitting must have been an optional extra as there is no space for it on the factory wooden base.

One more question, regarding the gas tank connections. There is the filler, the outlet including pressure control, and another connector with a white collar and a chrome cap nut. Is that white connector a prv ?
Some pictures I have seen have mini glass oilers on the engine. Are you using these or just oiling the bearings as required?

My Perseus plant is on the nice cast aluminium factory base, i had a water tank fitted too.

Regarding the gas tank, yours is the 'Surefill' system like mine. You are correct in that the white collar is used as a PRV but only when filling the tank. The red collar is used for the gas filler.  There is a chrome screw on valve with two holes on the side which you screw down on the white collar whilst filling the gas tank, when liquid gas vents through it the tank is full and it can be unscrewed and the gas filler shut off and both chrome caps replaced.

I just oil the bearings as required with a needle oiler filled with bearing oil, however i know some folks have tapped the oil holes on their engines and fitted glass oilers or brass oil cups.

Thanks that's great info.
Do you by chance have a copy of the Surefill gas system operating instructions?
Thanks

Thank you both guys, I will print that off.
I don't have the silver connection with the 2 small holes which goes onto the white valve when filling. So I wasn't too sure what it was like before I saw the picture. I guess I will be able to push the pin on the white valve down with an implement to let the air out as I am filling the tank and let it up as soon as it changes to liquid gas?
I am just cleaning up the base etc and touching up some of the green before I run the engine. I don't know the exact green colour so I will blend a small amount to match. The original certificate was fixed under the small wooden platform. It says P512 Don 28/2/11.
