Out of convenience I run them on air often , doesn't bother me either way.

Jim:  I may seem a little odd but I run my true
antique engines on air only and not for extended
periods. I do have several Mamod and Wiilesco
engines that I can Steam. Old Engines with brass
boilers can present dangerous problems.   Ron  - steamtoys

Jim, I use air when I want to run cast iron cylinder engines like several Stuarts.  A few of my Stuarts do not have drain valves on the cylinders, so I feel better running air vs. leave moisture for rust to set in.  Also, it's a good option as a test bed.  BUT, by and large most of my engines do get steamed if they have brass/bronze cylinders.

If I would get off my dead rear end and work on some projects I would run more on steam but for now air is an easier option - they're made to run on steam but air works okay for me.

I prefer steam, but air is preferable over not running at all!

  I run on air when fixing/testing or for a quick
show-off, but really, it is not as satisfying as
getting a persnickety burner and engine to
run like they should.  I will say this, I steamup
my electrics more often than my burners.
Steamed 3 empires last night - I was a bit down
so I steamed 'em up until the blues went away.

Running on air is better than not running at all. Steam is so much more dynamic. Better sound, much more power, a little element of risk. Steam makes better pictures and video. So I guess I’m all steam but big engines on air is always good enough.

I guess I'm of the same opinion as most of the folks I read here.  Steam is really what these engine were built to run on and there is something about having the whole system running that brings a smile to my face.  That being said, air is easier, quicker to set up and take down, and safer when little ones are around.

Air is for testing
Steam is the real deal .
And in my opinion any fool can make a engine that runs on air .
It is not a steam engine untill it has run on steam .
And while we are at it i do not like those videos of slow motion done digitally.
If you want to show a engine running slow do it properly in real time on steam.

I run them both on air and steam. 

Doesn’t bother me either way.
