With that flat slide valve it makes it one of the first engines, never seen a burner like that before but that doesn't mean it is not original, perhaps others will comment.

Might you have any other photos of the Brass Cover that is on the flip side of piston?  I saw the other photos on your site but they aren't real good to figure out how to repo one.  Might you still have contact with the owner of those photos, to get a updated / up close / higher-res photo?

We assume the two metal blobs on the top of the piston are "catches" for the brass cover.  Which we assume the brass cover is just something "pretty" for the outer face of the piston?  And this engine would still have a governor?

Oh - I have requested my brother to steam up the engine for a short video.  If he does that, I'll upload it to my YouTube and share it.  I haven't been able to find a video of one just like this one.

Lastly, when you say "one of the first engines" = pre-1900?

here's a interesting wrinkle, David Roenigk (via email) says this is a Bing?  He said this after he asked for "Weeden" marking and I sent him the front cap.

That shield on the end of the boiler is clearly a Weeden Logo.

It is true that Bing did produce a near replica of this engine on a special order. Sort of a long story concerning that, but rather than tell it here, I suggest you do your own research to sus out those details.

It would do you good to do so, I think!

I read that on Frank's site - the photo doesn't seem to match this engine.  But Dave is sure its a Bing... I think I am with Frank and you guys.  I had only email Dave to see if he has some magic part to allow a Governor to be mounted (then tells me it doesn't get one because its a Bing clone).

This is my Bing repro of a Weeden 14

I also have a Doll repro of a Weeden 14.
Kinda looks like the pix on weedensteam

And, of course, my Weeden 14

I was wondering when you were going to pop in Wayne!

From your video of the Bing Clone, I don't think that is what my brother has - unless there are more than one Bing Clone.  Thanks for the videos!

Thought you said you had been to Frank's website, then if so, how can you possibly say: "I don't think that is what my brother has - unless there are more than one Bing Clone."?

Please look at the lower lefthand photo.

I was referring to Wayne's "Bing Clone" YouTube video - that my brother's doesn't look like it.  Conversely I believe Frank/you are correct that its a early Weeden and Dave is mistaken and sent me into a tailspin LOL

Now that photo, what a superb reference - thank you so much!

Among other bits!

Looks like my hunt to find a way to get its governor back on has ended.  Frank has told me the cylinder is "lead", thus easy to mess up / melt.

@Stoker - that's pretty cool that write up about that Weeden at National Museum of American History - Weeden #14 with its write up, that one in their photo is later than my brothers (smoke stack came out after the lever safety valve).

And now Nate (my brother) sent me this one to ID for him.  I believe this is a Weeden No. 7  He hasn't tried to steam this one but it seems complete to me.

I am starting to get a little jealous of these photos he is sending me!

Yes, I understood that you were making that comment in reference to Wayne's engine, but by that time you had already been provided with conclusive evidence that your brother's engine was definitely a Weeden and not a Bing Clone, regardless of whether there were other Bing clone versions produced or not.

Sorry, just splitting hairs it seems!

That is a very nice #7 that your brother has, though the safety valve weight is actually a fishing weight I believe.

LOL @Stoker you sure are linking to rain on my parade today but you are spot on, that is a fishing weight!  Great catch!  BOOO!

I hear what you are saying, I had already been in "camp Weeden #14" before Waynes YouTube videos - his post just pushed the nail all the way down into the coffin.

Edit:
"I don't think that is what my brother has - unless there are more than one Bing Clone."
When I wrote that I was actually being sarcastic (inside my head).  If that helps the "hair splitting"?  :-)

Cost me a pretty penny but I got one from a eBay lot sell of mostly Weeden sight glass fittings.  Now to figure out the correct glass and seal for this awful fitting, sometimes it sucks trying to get something back to original state!

I guess trash bin for the rest of them.... J/K I never know when I'll need a Weeden part ;-)
