EMPCO (Empire) B-43 with Gumdrop Regulator Knob
« on: February 18, 2024, 03:30:27 pm »
I been wanting (needing?) one of the early B-43's that didn't have its tank strapped down, water pump, or reverser lever.  I am lucky that I got a pretty early one with the "rounded" parts and with the cool looking gumdrop throttle knob.  Though it wasn't running when I got it but the heater blanket is solid and while the paint isn't really good I can live with it. The nickel is in pretty good shape too.  Oh, no dents either!

The piston was a mess, wrong spring, no washers, and maybe a replacement piston too.  It took a lot of time and burning my fingers getting it to run somewhat properly.  I couldn't solve not being able to tighten the screw down, so I used Loctite to keep it in place.  If I didn't use Loctite then the piston would oscillate on the screw's thread and we can't have that (it would wear the treads down and the piston would fall off and likely not screw back on).

Next up was the regulator, it didn't regulate much, if at all.  It wouldn't even shut down the engine.  Also the screw was a bit wavy!  These gumdrop knobs were made to stay together forever.  They drilled a hole in the screw, placed in a pin through the knob and into the screw.  Not fun to get out.  It now has a new brass screw that is a little longer and with a real nice point that actually controls the steam, all the way to shutting it off.

I painted the regulator/throttle gumdrop knob.  I forgot to mention when I was drilling holes to get the keeper pin out, it isn't wood.  It isn't bakelite, I don't think, either.  I've seen some of the B30/31 engines whistle/throttle knobs made of the same stuff.

I have a new can of Krylon K05503007 Banner Red COLORmaxx (Paint and Primer) and it would just run off of the knob.  So wiped / cleaned the knob again and started with Rust-oleum Self-Etching Primer, then put on the Banner Red.  That seemed to work.

Once I can get my grimy oily fingers on it a bit, I think it will look better.

Thank you Charlie, it is always fun to work on other owner's "fixes".

Last night I was steaming it up and I am pretty sure I am at or near peak performance now.  When I had gotten the oscillating screw and spring sorted out I was still using the old throttle screw.  Also, I don't think you would call these oscillating piston's efficient.  So when I was on the original screw that never closed all the way, maybe 50% closed, I never really built up steam.  So during my final playtime last night I really let her build up, got the smoke stack gurgling and then released steam - the little guy went into warp speed!

Oscillators really can put on the best show of speed, and though they typically lack the deeper dig power of a slide or spindle valved engine, they generally seem to still have plenty of power to drive most any accessory we may have laying around.

Nice work Rich!!!

@Stoker since you mentioned accessories, I thought I run up some on this B-43!

And for comparison, the B-43 Cylinder that I got just before the one above with the oscillator piston:-)

Oh, after I turned off the power on this engine, it ran for over 2 minutes more.  The Oscillators are cooler to watch but the cylinder is better for accessories ;-)

A nice job of repairing your B-43!

Empire’s are fun little engines which make us smile :)

It is probably common knowledge in the community there are some good photos of and a bit of historical info for Empire engines on Al’s Steam Engines website. If not, the web address is

http://www.alspcs.com/Empire.html

His Empire 32 pics helped me sort a few things out as I corrected and repaired some previous “repairs”.

Best regards to all,

Really nice work.   Runs a charm.
