Brand New Peanut Rider needs attention on arrival
« on: February 23, 2021, 04:33:48 pm »
Factory New Peanut Rider showed up today. Instructions say factory run but check for loose screws anyway, upon inspection I noticed both displacement cyl and cooling fin side leaned toward the front of engine (burner side) by a fairly large amount! The engine turned over freely and I think it maybe would run this way, but I Must know way she is out of sorts! Out come the wrenches!
The photo was taken after I removed the rod but notice the top of cyl is leaning to the right in this photo and not well centered on the Vertical bearing tower. Viewed from the cooling fin side the lowest fin touched the firebox in the front and .050 gap in the rear. I forgot to photograph before disassembling. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Removed the (2) scews in front and carefully removed cyl assembly from frame casting. Found this large glob near the left screw...seems to be what is causing my cyl assembly to be not truly vertical....to be continued [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Picking at the bump with a knife revealed it was More than a Glob of the Pebble paint, there was a lump of metal that was also high. A small file cut the problem area back to flush. I think it may be better now but still looks to be not a mill finish between these mating parts.
The cyl assembly also had a sag in the powder coat and this is adding to the issue, I worked this down with a file as well but think I will take it to work and true it in Mill if it still does not look straight after assembly. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Also of interest, the instructions state the cyl is lubed with Graphite from factory, while I had it apart I swapped the bore with Q-tip and no trace of graphite noticed. I also noticed the piston appears to be treated with a service we call "Hard-coat" in my trade, it's possible that some time during the production they made this upgrade but there are small grooves in the piston that would serve to distribute and hold powdered graphite. At any rate I will add graphite to mine upon re-assembly. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Looks like your on top of it Ben , to bad you have to do all this work to a brand new engine 🤔

My brand new one from PMR was also a poor runner  :-\  It’s getting better with time. It actually came to a stop after my first video and the cylinder had to be cleaned/re-lubed to even get it going again. I have had to do this 3 times to get where I am now. Had this been my first ever engine, I probably would have given up on the hobby  :-\

I picked up a once fired older version that runs 5 times as fast as my newer model.

Update:
Well I thought with a Vertical Cylinder it would take right off, but no joy, it acted like hardly even try.
With a bit of tinkering I discovered that if I loosen the 2 screws that hold the cyl assembly on that the engine felt Much more free when rolled over by hand! So lit another Fire and sure enough, she took right off and even build a little speed.
Unfortunately as I watched the loose cyl it (should) have been shaking up-Down in a linear fashion (in screw clearance holes) but my cyl rotates in orbital fashion as when the top goes right the bottom goes left, so we have some side load bind issues!
I noticed the left cyl rod runs on a slant and the wrist pin is all the way to the left side of piston...thought for sure this was my problem but disconnect the left side and roll engine over and cyl still has orbital motion, think the wrist pin on that side was bent or closed up the slot for rod when they rivet in the wrist pin.
The wise man would have perhaps boxed this up and returned it, but I have all ready removed paint and the detective in me Wants to find ALL the problems with this engine and correct them All! I suppose I get satisfaction from taking a poorly executed unit and making it run good.
I may call PM Research tomorrow to see if they are aware of quality issues. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

So with the left side disconnected I still get orbital motion on loose Cyl so This wrist pin has got to have an issue!
I suppose the slot could be milled on an angle but I bet they bent the 2 outer legs when rivet in the pin, I dislike rivet pins and will make this one not riveted as I dig in to it....she is a Problem child for sure. Lol! [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
