Steam model books?
« on: August 10, 2025, 05:14:02 pm »
Can anyone recommend any model steam books? as I'm new to this hobby I'd like to have a good read about differnet manufactures and models.

I have the "how to build" books and i also have one called Toy Steam engines by Bob Gordon which I like but I'd like a lot more, any suggestions?

1. Blechspielzeug Dampfspielzeug, by Wolf Kaiser and Carlernst J. Baecker

Translation: Tin Toy Steam Toy

2. Schiffman Sammlerkatalog, by Schifmann-Verlag

Band (Volume) 21; Dampfmaschinen mit stehendem Kessel (Vertical Steam Engines)

Band (Volume) 23; Lokomobilen Dampffahrzeuge HeiBluftmotoren (Locomobiles; Steam Vehicles; and Hot Air Engines)

Band (Volume) 22; Dampfmaschinen mit ligeendem Kessel (Steam engines with a horizontal boiler)

3. The Toy Engine Collector, a Quarterly Newsletter for Steam, Hot Air and Electric Motor Toy Enthusiasts
Published from 1985 to January 2001 (24 Issues).

I have a complete set.  If you would like a copy, I can see how much it would cost to have it copied and bound.

4. Metalware Corporation, Empire Educational Toys (Steam Engines) by Donald Stilson

I believe that reprints can be purchased from Don's son.

5. Weeden, The Company and its Products by Kenneth Trobaugh

Information on purchasing a digital copy are available on the weedensteam.com website in its parts store.

Welcome to the hobby!  I've been involved for about 10 months and have been trying to learn all I can.

The internet is a great source of information, and it's free.  This site should give you a good rundown on many manufacturers and a good cross-section of their models:

Here are some additional sites I've found informative:

http://www.alspcs.com/Empire.html

http://www.ventix-pages.de/doll/D-Dampf/D-Alle_mit_Bild/d-alle_mit_bild.html

There are also a wealth of information on YouTube.  Two of my favorites -- search for "St. Paul Steam" and for "Keith Appleton".

Again, welcome to the hobby!
