It's quite a long daily routine checking all the sales sites

Facebook is where I found the Jensen 50 in Oklahoma
I still wonder how some of these older collectors amassed some of the most impressive collections pre-internet
We used to have this newspaper (solely ads) called the Trading Post that was published weekly. It would have been a lot of traveling because this was before PayPal and posting items.

What a memorable trip that was for you!

We had similar, swap and shop, etc. but there were no pictures. I have some pre-ebay steam catalogs with some sale ads, but when you look at some of these collections that Gil and others have shared pictures of, it really is unbelievable how many pieces they found
Living where I do (and where you do Nick) it would have been pretty much an impossible task.
The closest engine I have ever bought was the Stuart Beam that Gil & Ozsteamdemon said was a good engine on Gumtree and that was a 7 hours return drive.
Bummer seller just got back to me and said unfortunately she won't post it
Lots of similar items available in local thrift shops for a dollar or two
Besides my ebay "hobby" account, we have an ebay business account. Ebay will not add sales tax to your purchases if you provide them with a tax exemption certificate, at least for us here in Pennsylvania. I realize this doesn't help most ebay buyers, but as far as small businesses, it definitley helps.
